Pheli, your friend is right. there where this species grows it makes it in high quantities (people "hates" them on coffee plantations and are even considered a weed!) Normally you have both hight temperatures and humidity during the whole year there too. Please note that even when the plants are exposed to heavy (and I mean very heavy, almost Monsoon type kind of rain) during about 6 months of the year, the dry out very quick between rains, and then they have about 6 months without rain (however, the relative humidity is still very high!). I have seen it growing completelly exposed to sun but also in more shaded places...
Maybe it would be worthy to keep it in Sphag but out of the pot (more like the Spahg mountains used for Neofinetia) that way it would e possible to control better the wetness of the medium. letting it dry a bit between waterings... and also helping to have a high air humidity around the plant during the dry season
