Masdevallia erinacea

Really hard to get a close-up of these small flowers with clarity, using my lousy camera. Hopefully the photos are worthy enough to share.

Nicely done! I have trouble blooming this one ... suspect my irregular watering practices are to blame,

Yes indeedy, this one has been a lot of fun to work with.

The original plant has provided me several hefty divisions as an added perk. Recently gave away two good-size divisions to a plant pathology professor at a nearby university. She was in the process of organizing a miniature orchid set-up in their lab.

All my indoor set-ups stay on the warmish side (year round). Unforunately, I don't keep any other Masdevallia species because I'm not able to provide the growing conditions they need ~ mainly due to temperature ~ and there are many Masdevallia that I really enjoy and would like to keep. Maybe (further down the road) I'll get into it with a dedicated cooler temperature set-up.

M. erinacea has done really well for me with warm temperatures. I grow them potted in LF spahgnum... consistent year round temperatures (warmish), RH (usually ranges around the +/- 70% mark), bright artificial lighting, watered and fertilized lightly on a regular schedule. They flower regularly throughout the year when happy.
