Default Two Mediocalcar species

Both these species are in bloom at the moment.

Mediocalcar versteegii

Mediocalcar decoratum

I am a bit confused about the first species since IOSPE shows a red and white flower for this species: http://www.orchidspecies.com/medioversteegii.htm. perhaps someone can help.

Hi;
I also have these two species.About M.versteegii: there seem to be many color combinations of this and ALL Mediocalcar species.
Do you have E.J.Brill:Orchid Monographs vol.8?:it discusses this problem ,and has lots of color photos.
It seems to me that vegetative habit is more indicative of species type than flowers (in Mediocalcar anyway),as their flowers are so similar, and even drawings with dissections dont help much.I know, I tried.!
Take care,
Spiro

p.s. also look at IOPSE photo for M.Versteegii susp.intermedium (green tips)

Ron,

I love those flowers and I don't in any way mean to be disrespectful BUT when I first looked at this thread I thought it said "Two Mediocre Species".

I don't think they're mediocre at all.

Thanks for sharing this rare experience of orchid growing that you captured so beautifully.

I am reminded of your article about how precious orchid photos can be to have and to share.

Hi Ron -
Every time I see a photo of one of these, I am consumed by lust! Sadly, I think they would not care for my climate. I also looked at your photo of the whole decoratum plant on flickr - wowza!
Very lovely! Centerpiece-worthy!
Regards - Nancy
