Default Downsizing

Recently lost my job, and figured I needed to downsize my collection to streamline things. I sold about fifty plants, and moved all of the rest onto one shelf under a six-bulb T5 florescent unit. Here's the result. Looks like I've got more plants than I started with. How the heck does that happen?? Hope the plants at the bottom get enough light... -Stephen

I'm sorry to hear about your job.
That looks like a very nice set up.

Sorry to hear about your job, I've been there. On the flip side that shelf looks great and there seems to be enough light reaching the bottom. I would do phals and paphs on the bottom shelf since they don't require as much light but I'm sure that you know that.

Too bad about losing your job. I went through the same thing not long ago and it was absolutely awful. I'm sorry you're having to go through that.

When I got laid off I found it very helpful to stay focused on things that really mattered - and to try and not get too caught up with worrying about finding work (or worrying about what I would do if I couldn't find work). Anyway, I didn't have my orchid addiction then, but my regular plant fetish definitely helped me stay sane. Just try to remember that work is not who you are, and that family, friends, and plants () are more important in the long run. By the way, your remaining orchid collection looks great - much more impressive than my beginner shelf.

Another piece of advice that I really appreciated was to treat the 'Job Search' like a normal job. The idea being to spend 8 hours a day looking for a new job, and then to stop thinking about it. So after 5:00pm, don't worry about looking for work. Easier said than done, I know, but the idea is to spend time with your loved ones (or whatever) and try to not stress out about some stupid job (or lack of job). In any case, I'm sorry that you're in this tough spot, and I'm looking forward to seeing photos of your restored orchid collection when you get back on your feet.

Thanks for the kind words, and the advice. I hate to be contrary, but I'm a symphony orchestra muscian - so work kinda is who I am. The big problem is that I can't just walk into another orchestra position. Winning an orchestra audition is a bit like winning the lottery. But I'm certainly trying to stay positive. Onward and upward...

My condolences on losing your job, best of luck in finding something new.

The shelf looks great, though, and hopefully it will give you some enjoyment until you find a wonderful new gig.

Hi Stephen,

I assume by your avatar that you play the french horn. You are braver than I am. I gave up classical viola because I just couldn't stand being poor and working all the time.

Good luck on your next audition. Hope some openings come your way.

what a great job to have had. i'm a horn player myself <3 im sorry that you no longer have that opportunity. i myself am scared of losing my job. im struggling enough as it is. i stopped purchasing orchids altogether for the time being. id rather save money and dedicate more attention into nursing my winter-tattered orchids back to health. best of luck -omar

WOW, great plants! But so sorry to hear about your current situation.

A long time ago I was a classical pianist and was very tempted to pursue it as a career, but I feared what you are going through so I did not pursue it.

I truly wish you the best for the future. Keep your chin up - that's the most important thing you can do.

I am searching for a job currently as well, though I am fortunate enough to currently have one in my field. When the economy goes sour, marketing jobs are the first to go and last to come back. And to get a job you always have to have experience which doesn't happen unless someone actually hires you, and my field is known for not paying much until you have years of experience. It's a tough market and staying positive is the hardest part about it.

I agree Stephen. Works defines who I am and I define my work somehow.

I am passionate about what I do but I am always broke and I have to make sacrifices.

Think about different opportunities for musicians.

Consider teaching or playing for private clients and so on while you look for a way to achieve what you want.
