Beautys of Mexico part II - Orchid Board

Hi to all:
This 2 little one's are blooming right now, the first is the Cuitlauzina pendula with lovely color and a very sweet smell, and the second, one of the many Encylias that are found in Mexico, this time is the Encyclia alata.

Beautiful flowers, Juan. Is your Encyclia alata grown in a pot or mounted? I have one that's just a baby (well, at least I think it's a baby; it's got three growths that are each around ten inches tall and is growing very well in a four inch clay pot). It hasn't flowered yet, but I'm looking forward to the day that it does. I also have a couple of other Mexican species: Stanhopea nigroviolacea and Encyclia (now Euchile?) citrina, both of which flower every summer. Marvelous orchids you have in your country! Thanks for sharing your pictures.

Encyclia alata holds special meaning for my mother-in-law and myself. About 7 years ago, a friend of hers was moving away and gave my MIL an orchid, not blooming and with no tag. She cared for it for years with no results. We called it her "mystery orchid" and it was an ongoing source of laughter. About 2 years ago, it finally bloomed! We decided to bring it to our local meeting to see if we could learn more about it. Neither of us had ever had an orchid before. We walked in the door with this big gorgeous orchid and one of the members, Garnet, walked past and said "Oh, nice Encyclia alata"! I was so impressed that I knew then I just had to learn more about these wonderful plants...and the rest is history

I've since divided it for her and of course...I got a division

Can you, please, tell me how do you treat your Cuitlauzina pendula? I was thinking in getting one for myself

Hi Steve, mine is in a 31/2 in plastic pot, the medium is fir bark and is placed with my cattleyas, so is receiving a lot of light. Is the second time that is blooming in 6 months, I hope yours bloom soon.
Tricho the Cuitlauzina have to have a rest period, in the winter and spring time. Durin this period you dont water or fertilizer your plant until st start forming the inflorecences, when they are about 5 cm long you can reiniciate the watering and the fertilizer. Allways remembering to have the plant and a humid place (60%-80%).

PS My Euchile citrina is staring to open its flowers and also my Sanhopea hernandezii, so soon more pictures
