I neglected to mention in all my prior posts that we need to make sure our suggestions are available, at least in the US because most of our participants are here. Sorry...if I had mentioned it, there would be no confusion now

I love many of the plants you've all suggested already...and that's after just one chat!

We'll have to fine-tune the lists because I did see a few that aren't going to work in some locations...but we'll get to that in the next few days.

I'm just starting to make headway in my computer repairs but it's going to take another day or two to get it all together. I most likely won't make chat tonight but will try to get there for a short visit tomorrow night.

Right now, I'm working on an AOL dial-up account...ugghhh!!!
I just can't stand it!

By Thursday, I should have my regular system back and will have the member lists and plant lists set up the way I've done in the past...please bear with me for a day or two. Keep up the good work...this is going to be fantastic!

All of my suggestions(except Maxillaria confusa, but am still looking) are available in the US, either at Santa Barbara Orchid Estate, Andy's Orchids or J&L Orchids.

I also put every one's lists through my custom google search engine for EU vendors and I found most of them available in the EU. I have a lot of vendors entered in it, but some/many are not compatible with custom search.
If anyone is interested in the list, I can post it!

How do you do a custom google search? I have never heard of that and it sounds really cool!

First you need to create an account on google I think. Then in the tabs at the top of the page click on the arrow next to 'more' and a the bottom click on ' even more' Custom search is normally on the right hand side of the page.
It's good, but the problem is that a lot of sites are incompatible with it. For example, I have 12 sites in mine I think, and only half of them seem to work. I still have to search manually on the sites that don't work including my favorite one.........

So how do these lists get winnowed down? I just had the opportunity to buy in person from Andy's et al...hopefully you pick something I bought.

We usually look for an orchid that is small or medium in size .. more on the smaller size, a warm to intermediate grower, (fragrance is a bonus but not essential) it's availability and order it bloom size ... Sue is in charge of culling down the prospects after they are discussed.

When we get to the point that we're no longer adding plants and just discussing a certain dozen or so, we'll discuss each plant and as a group, decide whether there's enough interest to include it in the final poll which should include about a dozen choices. Each participating member will be able to vote once and the plant with the most votes at the end of the poll (usually open for one week) is the plant we all get.

The "reward" for being involved in the projects here isn't necessarily the plant itself...I find the process to be the most interesting part! So many plants suggested...and each one researched...there's no way to avoid absorbing some knowledge! My wish list always grows at project time

...and then, of course, don't forget the treasured "traveling companions"

Hey everybody! Great list of plants!!

I thought I would try and save Sue all that looking things up, and I've taken the lists compiled by Susie and Adam (thanks guys!!) added in the other suggestions here from those who couldn't be on the chat. That gave us a list of 85 species to work with!

So, I also added the places available (Camille, I'm still working on including the European availability that you kindly generated) and any other information that people posted here.

I've not gone into the other threads on the Project to find information there as well, just what has been posted here.

If people post the availability here, I'll add it into the list.

That way, Sue won't need to look up orchids that aren't available.

Also, I've added names to the suggestions, so if multiple people suggested a plant, all of their names appear after the plant names. In past projects, this was one way used to narrow down the list. That should be our next step... but first, lets weed things out by availability. If we can get the ones not available off the list, we could possibly narrow things down a bit more by listing our top few favourites...
