As long as the orchid medium dries quickly and allows plenty of air to the roots, it will not matter what you use.

My larger plant loves semi-hydroponic culture. It sends roots way down into the medium. The smaller plant is still in its pot; I need to mount it on something. It has so many growths in so many different directions I think a mount will be the only way to handle it.

My plants most definitely make new roots only after finishing new growths. Do other people notice this?

both of mine have little new growths about 1 inch tall and those new growth are growing roots. They are pretty tiny right now, but are growing pretty quickly.

Yes mine do this also. And my smaller plants have way more roots than my larger one does.

Mine have all finished there new growths and I am waiting to see how long it takes before they start again.

My new growth (on my potted one that kept blasting new growths) is actually doing well. It is getting so long and going downwards I had to set it near the edge so the growth can hang off the shelf. Could a bud be in the near future??? That would be nice. The mounted one is doing well but no buds there either.

Good to hear it is finally doing well! Fingers cross for flowers. I would love to see them!

I just knocked off a new growth on two of mine but I am sure both will try again (and they have other young growths). I like this orchid because it is vigorous.

So, went into Lowe's to pick up orchid bark today (the one in Heath with the bag babies) and came home with three more walkeriana semi alba 'Carmela.' Not that I needed more orchids, but these were easily twice the size of the one I bought early in the summer for the same price....All of them need to be repotted, and are showing a "climbing" growth habit with the rhizome heading upwards (sort of like some Oncs).

So, having 4 of the same cv gives me a wonderful opportunity to try different growing conditions. One is going into a terrarium where it can grow up the cork and branches on the back wall. I'd like to mount one of the others and grow it with the other mounted orchids in the living room. The original is potted in bark, and I think I'll keep it there.

I'm toying with semi-hydro for the fourth one--any ideas or tips to get me started?

Wow, that is great! I saw we had new bag babies at our Lowes but I was with spouse and he was in a hurry. I might need to sneak back and take a closer look.

I haven't tried anything unique with mine...except the one that came mounted. It will be interesting to see how yours all fare!

Thank you Leafmite! I don't really need more orchids, but couldn't pass up the walkerianas (and others)....BTW, one of the nice things about being single is not having to worry about spousal issues ("you got how many more orchids??!!") with my obsessions, er, hobbies (lol)....

One thing that's missing from a lot of orchid information is the "how I kept it/how I grow it" nuts and bolts type of stuff. And we don't usually get a comparison of growing methods on the different orchids of the same species/cvs at the same time. This way I can see how 4 plants of the same genetic background respond to different growing conditions during a given time frame.....The results won't be definitive (the sample sizes for each growing method would have to be much larger), but they can at least give us some insights into what various conditions do to these plants....

I think it is an interesting experiment.
