Good evening everyone!

I don't know if this is the right place to put this thread, but here goes!

I was reading on various other forums, and have found that groups of people will order the same orchid (not mericlone, but grown from seed) and grow it simultaneously. then post the updates in one thread so everyone can see the progress of each others plants. I thought this would be fun to build community here and also to see what might come out of a cross of the plants grown from seed that came from the same parents. If anyone wants to do this just do a post in this thread!

I would like to select a given cross from Sunset Valley Orchids (with everyones help of course, majority rules). I believe Fred makes stellar orchids from seed, and think that it would be the best place to get a bulk order of the same cross. Ideally, we should select an orchid that everyone can grow, which means fairly affordable, and lower care demands, a compact or mini plant is also advisable as many of us are already suffering from cramped houses from the sheer quantity of flora already covering our benches (although there is always room for one more)

As for the symantecs of the order, I would order the plants in a single order. When I receive them I would then ship out to anyone who wishes to participate. I believe that this would be the cheapest way to do it for a large group as shipping is 20 dollars regardless if you order one plant or ten from SVO.

I would like to keep the cost to participate below 25 dollars. I don't think we should have an issue staying below 20, but plan on 25 for good measure. Payments would be made via paypal. If you would like to tack on other plants let me know.

So go ahead! Look at the selection of orchids, post an orchid or two that you want to grow as a group project and we will take up a vote in a week or two!

Looking forward to this, as I think it will be a lot of fun if we get enough people!

My personal top pick is

Lc. Miss Wonderful

Below are two different blooms from SVOs website

Sunset Valley Orchids - Superior Hybrids for Orchid Enthusiasts

Sunset Valley Orchids - Superior Hybrids for Orchid Enthusiasts

I have seen two flowers from this cross and they are absolutely stunning! I can only imagine what a group would look like!

If we wanted to go the species route, I want to try a walkeriana, preferably the cross with the alba form

At this time we have 3 projects going (everyone gets the same type of orchid and compares notes). The main project plant is Amesiella Monticola, and the 2 side projects are Podangis dactyloceras and Dendrobium cucumerinum. If you are on the main forum page and scroll down to the "Other Orchid Stuff" section you will see Member Projects.
I would definitely be interested in joining a seedling project...perhaps bring it up again when the next project is getting ready to start...

I'd definitely be interested in a seedling Cattleya challenge. I didn't take part in this year's project, because I didn't like any of the proposed orchids. C. aclandiae was on the list, but it got turned down.

There are no rules as to who organizes projects and when they should be. The usual and semi-'official' projects that have been going on for the past 7-8 years tend to have criteria that allow a maximum number of people to join in, from all over the world. But you, or anyone else here, are free to create a new project with whatever restrictions you want. We've had a Canada only project for instance, and a seedling/flask project I believe. So if you can get enough interest for this, go ahead! (warning, in past projects participant numbers has gone upwards of 30 people...)

I'm moving this thread to the member projects forum.

Ditto, what Camille says, see what interest you can get and if you get enough to feel it's worth it then go ahead.

We do have 3 recent projects running just now, which might cause less interest at this time, you might get more if you get it going when those are a bit older... but then again I could be completely wrong, especially as you are proposing something a bit different with seedlings.

The reason we have three projects just now is because after the main project plant was chosen so many people were interested in two of the others that it made it worth starting project threads for those as well, so lots of enthusiasm for projects just now

Oh yeah, I wasn't saying aclandiae per say, I was just using an example. I had to get one myself and do a solo project It is growing so well that I wan't another

I'd be up for anything in the Cattleya alliance though.

I guess let's see what kind of interest we have in a cattleya project. If we order over 250 we get a 10% discount from svo. Unfortunately, I would not be able to ship out of the US. My first choice is shown in my first post. Thanks for moving the post Camille!!
