Default Spring 2015 plant project: FINAL VOTE! (PARTICIPANTS ONLY)

It’s time for the final poll !!! (unless we get a tie in this poll…)

We used the results of the first poll to check availability of the different plants, in order of preference. Unfortunately some plants which got a lot of votes (C. aclandiae, Oeoniella polystachys, Hadrolaelias..) did not make it to the final poll because there were difficulties finding enough of them available, and within our price range. So we kept moving down the list until we had 5 good choices.

But you still have these plants from which to vote for your favorite!

Podangis dactyloceras IOSPE PHOTOS Google images

Dendrobium cucumerinum IOSPE PHOTOS Google images

Leptotes bicolor IOSPE PHOTOS Google images

Amesiella monticola IOSPE PHOTOS Google images

Cattleya walkeriana IOSPE PHOTOS Google images

Here are the growers in the US where we have confirmed availability. They may be available at other vendors that we didn’t know of while doing the poll, so you can buy from where ever you prefer and can find it. I then listed growers for EU, Canada and Australia, but didn’t confirm for any of them since there are so few participants in each area.

Leptotes bicolor
Andy's (BS) 20$ (200 some odd plants, plenty to go around)
Seagrove (NBS) 30$
J&L Orchids (BS) 20$ Getting Low
Marlow (5 left, BS) 30$
Carter and Holmes (BS) 15$ with limited time special discount.
Clown Alley (BS) 20$

Piping Rock 23$ (BS 40$ minimum to order)

Windy Hill ($12 Has 20 in stock. Minimum Order)

Podangis dactyloceras
Marlow (3 left BS) 22$
Orchid Web (BS) 30$ (8 in stock)
Parkside Orchids (BS) 25$
Hausermann's (BS) 25$
Diamond 25-30$
Al's Orchid Greenhouse 16$ (8 Left)
CalOrchid (BS) 20$
NWO (Not sure on size) 20$ 3 in stock
J&L 20$ Getting Low
Clown Alley (BS) 15$

Den cucumerinum
Al's Orchid Greenhouse (BS) 22$ (8 Left)
Paramount (BS) 26$
Seattle Orchid (4 left. BS) 27$
Hausermann's (BS) 23$
Clown Alley (BS) 20$
Andy’s (NBS) (50 plants remaining. Plenty to go around) 18$

Amesiella monticola
Orchid Web (BS) 25$ (8 in stock)
Marble Branch Farms (NBS) 14$
Marlow (10 plants left BS) 20$
Hausermann's BS (15$)
First Ray's (BS) 15$ (Half dozen, willing to order in more for us if needed)
J&L (BS) 25$ Getting Low.
Clown Alley (BS) 20$

Parkside 25$ (Decent amount of them)

Cattleya walkeriana : (added to the list at the last minute so we don’t have an exhaustive a list)
Gold Country Orchids (BS) $25 (more than enough for all)
Hausermann $15-25 (assumed to be BS) depending on size
Andy’s Orchids (NBS) $28
Al’s Orchids (2.5in pot; size unknown) $8
H&R $10-$110 (many in the $20-30 range) Lots to choose from!

I had to vote Leptotes bicolor. It's stolen my heart and I'll probably miss the discount if it doesn't win.

Well, my choice was easy...only one of my five made it to this list. It was sad reading the discussion about them and seeing all five of my choices on the list at one time or another only for most to get eliminated.

Yeah, I felt pretty exasperated at times when I was researching the species options because it is HARD to find more than 10 of any one plant at a single grower.

A lot of the growers that are out there on the internet are small, hobby growers that are providing divisions of their own plants, or seedlings that they have deflasked themselves. So, their numbers are limited and more often than not, their plants are not blooming size.

Some are also just not very tech savvy. I had to explain to one grower what OrchidBoard was when I called.

The bigger growers, like Andy's, took a long time to get back to me. Probably just because of the sheer volume of email they get.

Yes, it is frustrating but in order to make it fair to everyone's pocketbook we have to find enough quantities in blooming size within the price range. Many of us add TC plants because you can never have a lonely plant order.
