Spring 2015 project: PLANT SUGGESTIONS

I think your right about the price. Everything has upped in price so we must go with the flow. Yes I just saw another members Schenorchis fragrans and what a cute little plant. I may be rethinking it.

I do understand it is to try a new species. It was just a suggestion, and doesn't have to be taken off if others want it, I'm OK with it. I'll try what ever goes. We still have to vote on it anyway.

Problem with spending more on the plants themselves, though, is there's also shipping costs to take into account. I just checked Carter & Holmes (they have some cute little $12 stuff), and apparently they would charge $12 for shipping, which would take too big a chunk out of my bank account if I were to buy a $30 plant.

A big Thank you to all of thé membres that have taken thé Time to research all these different plants to grow as a project! I know from previous experience it's a long process finding availability all over the world.....unfortunately I still have not found time to participate, but LOVE the suggestions and look forward to the final poll and taking advantage of ordering a few more as TC's!!

Sarcochilus hartmannii - listed as W-C, but every site says they are temp tolerant and easy to grow.

Wow, thanks for all the hard work!! Still trying to compile this all into one post. I was also going to suggest Podangis dactyloceras and a Sarcochilus.

Off the top of my head, mostly americans (at least 20) 4 from EU, 2 aussies,1 canadian and 1 south african.

The list will be narrowed done precisely by researching growers to suppy us... First we start by checking which sites list it Anything that can't be found easily goes off the list that eventually we poll on. Then we usually do a first poll to vote for the, say, top 5-7 orchids. Then at that step we ask growers how many they have in stock, and remove plants if necessary. Then we vote for the final project plant!

As to the question of price, at the start of this project I was thinking that $20 was going to be a bit low as prices have increased over the years. I understand that it's not nice to pay more (with shipping to calculate in as well), so going from $20 to $30 is a pretty big leap. We can raise the limit to $25, so in the middle. Is that fair enough?

I also added a few suggestions of my own, which I've started researching but will continue later:

Dendrobium aberrans
Bulbo lobbii or dearei
Phal (Kingidium) deliciosum/deliciosa
Dendrobium tetragonum


I think that once I've researched those we can then move on to culling the list of all the $25+ orchids, and see which are available in the most regions, and then compile a final list to have our first poll on!

**Ok, so I’ve gone through the list (excluding my new suggestions for now) and started culling out the expensive ones, and so far these are probably out, mostly due to price.

Habenaria medusa
Schoenorchis fragrans (limited availability once we exclude the too expensive places)
Paphiopedilum niveum (Paphs have always been problematic for projects, they’re quite expensive in the US)
Laelia pumila
Laelia jongheana
Chiloschista lunifera
Dendrobium dichaeoides
Sarcochilus hartmannii


**Limited availability in US (from what’s been researched), so may be out:

Laelia praestans
Laelia sincorana
Dyakia hendersoniana


**Some are really on the high end of the scale, and may be removed if we already have a decent enough candidate list :

Aerangis fastuosa
Eurychone rothschildiana (25 in UK, but once converted to Euros, it’s nearly 35...)
Dendrobium laevifolium

In my defense, I suggested a Sarc. a while ago and was immediately shot down by someone saying they are very difficult to grow. I love the look of their flowers and may still try one even if it's not a project plant.

Don't think it was in this thread you mentioned it, I don't see it, and I would have added it to the list. Difficult plants can still be project plants, at least there's lots of people to ask help from! I haven't heard of them particularily difficult to grow and like you, I plan on getting one anyway!
