If we did a hybrid it should be a seed grown cross not a clone. If it was a clone everyone's flowers would be the same. It would be fun to do a seed grown hybrid so we could all compare flowers and see what each plants flowers look like. It would be hard to find the same seed grown hybrid in all regions though.

I think if we did that (as Rowangreen initially suggested) it would have to be one project by region. Personally I don't remember ever coming across seed grown hybrids before, most are mericloned. This could be combined with the seedling/flask project. I thought that it would be better to postpone such a project until spring so there is time to organize it, but since so many people want such a project, I guess that what we'll do it this summer, though I was hoping for something simple...

Seed grown hybrids are out there: in the EU Roelke and McBeans are two that do their own hybrids and sell the excess flasks and seedlings. And aren't Paphs always seed grown?

I think a flask task would probably have to be longer in the planning, so aiming for autumn at least. I think there's a couple of routes we could go with it: either ask sellers in different regions what they have coming up that there's going to be enough of, and vote between that. Or the longer route that might ensure there's enough of the same (maybe species) flask for all regions: eg setting something up with a seller like Eucaugenera as I suggested before. They have 'delivered in 3 months' on all their flasks, which suggests they sow to order?

(I also wonder about all Schwerter's phal crosses and if there's a source for seedling phal crosses out there...)

Camille: I don't think you should have to organise anything you don't want to. It may well be that there are plenty of people who'd like to do a standard project right now.

I"ll do some research into a seed grown hybrid project to see if it's somewhat easy enough to do this summer. But it's very likely that the plant will be imposed since I doubt there will be many options for voting. I had thought it would be best to put it off until next spring, so that there is all winter to plan and organize. Your suggestion of Eucaugenera is good, but each region would start the project at different times since I doubt they would visit all 3 within in a very short timespan. Also something to look into.
The thing is that it's better to do a project that people want, rather than me declaring "ok people, it will be done like this"

Good luck! You want the 'orchi pack' and 'norm pack' sections on Roelke *G* Some intriguing crosses currently available: don't know what the numbers are of course.

Also really wondering about the Schwerter phals: I'm sure a lot of his are mericlones, but quite often he has just pictures of the parents, which can mean seed grown and therefore not guarenteed outcome.

Thanks Camille for volunteering for this. I'm not sure if I will be able to actually take part, but adding a couple of comments anyway.

A Cool/Intermediate/Warm project has worked in the past, I thought perhaps there was less activity over all on those projects because people posting on a plant prompt others to post and a very busy project with lots of participants seems to provoke more interest once the plants are bought. That was my reasoning for going back to one plant when I ran one last year, however finding enough in the USA IS the nightmare part of that, and I remember the same problem (and there were less USA participants that the one just gone).

The idea of a group of closely related plants sounds good to me, if you can come up with enough groups that would fit the bill (and have enough supply). If growing requirements were very similar across the group it would allow everyone to discuss their plants and their conditions in one thread.

I'm not sure if a flask project would scare some off (it would scare me to start with a plant that small) but then again it could be good to have a different sort of project like that for those that want to do that. It does sound quite fun as something different.

Anyway, just my

Re seed-grown hybrid project. Just have to make a fairly obvious sugestion. I know there's availability in both the States and EU (last time I looked anyway) and it would be very cool. Not for me though as I don't have the money/space/experience. But thought I'd raise it in case there's a gang would LOVE to do it...

Check this link: sample pictures suggest seed grown not a clone

LOL

Ak, that didn't work. Go to most expensive item in the Catasetum section...

Anyone want to raise the cost price limit that much?

If we do this this summer, it won't be flasks. I'll try to hunt down young plants of seed grown hybrids in all 3 regions. The easiest to find will likely be the primary hybrids. If I see that it's proving too difficult, then we'll postpone until next year and figure out what to do this summer!
