The buds don't have to be red yet. They usually are green when the leaf first opens but they are shaped like a bud and you can clearly tell they are buds. Yes time will tell. It seems kind of early to bloom too. Your plant could still grow another growth and bloom late winter.

I am finally getting a couple of new roots! (doesn't take much to excite me)

Mine took awhile to get going because I really had it at a bad angle to the light and I don't think it got enough for it's taste. But as soon as I got it more light and moisture, it really took off! 3 new bulbs, I just wish I could see more roots, but I think they're all burying themselves in the mount and I can't see them much

I wish I'd taken more pictures of when I first spotted each new growths, but my camera battery is never charged when i think about it I need to be more dilligent!

The last growth really took me by surprise though, seeming to come from one of the oldest bulb on the plant! And now, please someone tell me those are really buds I see coming on the biggest new leaf (apologies for the low pic quality, my poor Cybershot really isn't up to detail work)? The bottom new bulb's leaf has opened but it seems to have this little green thing like 31drew31's. The new leaf on the side hasn't opened yet, so I am crossing my fingers for that one too.

Now if only my Max. tenufolia would give me even the slightest hint of flowers ever, my summer would be complete

I'm jealous of you people who are already seeing buds. As always, I'm lagging behind in the growths and roots phase.

Jealous!!! Good growing though!

I am curious if anyone has an idea of how long on average it's taking for the new growths to mature (or at least to when leaves start to open)? I spotted my little leads ages ago and they've grown since, but they seem very slow to me and I don't see any leaves yet.

This was mine on May 10th.


And as of Aug 28th


So a little over 3.5 months for me.

That's pretty quick growing for a plant which is considered slow!
Mine's still doing very well, though it seems like the 2 growths are slower to grow than yours. It's only been a week or two since I can see the leaf starting to appear. But then again both growths are coming from the same bulb, so it's twice as much work for it!
I don't expect to see any buds on either one, my plant is still too young normally. I think the grower told me to expect blooms in a year.

After seeing some of the photos I wonder if we all have the same species ?
Maybe I am the one with something different
The roots of mine are much thinner, almost spindly and the leaves appear rounder and smaller. Growth is slow but consistent.
I suppose when mine blooms, I'll be sure !

Yay! Aside from my phal. violacea, my first species blooming success! Now, watch me being extra careful to keep those buds from blasting!

And NathalieS, I got my plant late April, and I didn't have any new growths until June, but as soon as I gave it more light and put the mount in a saucer that retained some water... BAM!, 2 new bulbs poked out, with the third one playing hide and seek under the oldest leaf. So, about 3 months for my soph. no idea if it's the normal growth rate though!

Come to think of it, maybe the ungodly heat we've had scared it into growing faster! I don't think my living room went under 78 for all of July and most of August, even at night, with day averages of 84 due to my MH lamp.
