Mine is sprouting a new root too, which makes me feel good since the plant is not very happy, there are random black spots appearing on it and I lost 2-3 leaves, i used a systemic on it which seem to be keeping the spota at bay, but I don't think that my climate is prime for this plant, any advise? Like you too I was hooping for a spike , but it needs more strength, ao a new root is better for my guy.

Here is a look at my spike, it started to come out about 3 weeks ago, I hope this ID helps. Jim.

How interesting! I would never have expected it to come from "down under"

Thanks, Jim!

Get an orchidaium! I've got the Exo Terra tank and all the orchids that I have in it, LOVE it. Here's a link to my set up. It doesn't hold a lot of orchids but it's great for mini orchids and it's great if you have an orchid that needs to go into an ICU.

I live in Cali too. I keep the Aerangis in the kitchen under lights. I put some S/h around the top so it won't dry out as much and make sure I spray it twice a day. Mine is on a cork mount. You should post a pic maybe someone can ID the problem.

This little guy really needs high humidity, warmth and lower light (like Haraella). I agree an orchidarium is ideal but not required. A small aquarium from wal-mart or Petsmart would work also. It needs a top to hold in some humidity and a wet sponge (or 2) in the bottom to create humidity. Given a pretty-good supply of moisture, you should probably forgo the top so mold doesn't build up.

My little plant is enjoying a huge burst of growth. Since I've brought my plants in they all seem to be growing and blooming. I've got new roots and new leaves on this little plant.

Update! I think I related how my son broke off the biggest of the 2 spikes on mine... (AAADD), well mine has decided to grow a second spike anyways (well, actually a third if you're counting) and I pointed it out to him. I told him: "George, I want you to know that the contest orchid decided that despite all your efforts, it WILL have 2 spikes!" He laughed! Can you imagine?
