Silken, what you're seeing in the pics is only the top of the plant. There the bracts are still green. Further down the bracts are brown and dead, though overall it still looks pretty clean.

Mine has a lot of brown bracts lower down as well. I think it's normal on these.

It is. In fact the roots start from the bottom of each pulb and travel down the 'stems' under those bracts. So don't pull them off!

Mine too has green bracts at the top & browner ones at the bottom of the plant.

OK, thanks everyone. I feel better about mine! It has a couple of different new growths at the moment so maybe one is a bud. One is kind of long and skinny and the other not as much, although it is shorter. Time will tell.

Growths come from right up against the bulb, while spikes emerge from the 2-3 bract down and have a more rounded tip.

Thought I would post this here since I used this thread to try and get mine to bloom.

It's blooming!
I've got one open flower and 5 buds.

I'm very excited.

You guys weren't kidding. The buds sort of just pop up out of no where.

We were talking about light on this one previously, and just to note I've had mine (and my yellow variety of it as well) in full sun 10:30am - 7:30pm (ish) during our recent 3 week long heat-wave (as bright and hot as we get here).

They have not been adversly affected by the sun at all, in fact have not been afected good or bad as far as I can see. But they can certainly take this bright light.

I've had them in the same spot since April and while the milt spectablis with them took some initial burn before it adjusted (we had a very sunny April too) these didn't even have that problem. They seem to love the light (at this latitude at least). The length of time in direct sun has gone steadily up as day length has increased and the sun has cleared next door's house earlier in the day.
