Default Questions concerning Orchid Projects

I've seen the orchid projects unfold here on OB - and am a little confused by it - but I want to eventually participate - maybe next time there's a project. . .so could you help clarify some things?

Are there rules established with each project from the beginning. . . or is each project molded by what people want to do (voting? Is that what I'm seeing here?) after everyone is signed up? Is there a specific focus or goal in mind for each project?

How long does the average project give for sign up?

Is it always growing a particular orchid? Is one specific type chosen and compared? Or are there several types chosen?

Is this a contest of sorts?

I did a search on projects, and I didn't really understand the breadth and depth of it. . .so if you could help clear it up, I'd appreciate it - I'd like to participate at some point.

Hi Beth

This will explain the beginnings of the OB Projects:
Orchidboard Projects

There are no real "rules" but rather guidelines.
We try to keep the plants at a certain size as some folks have space issues to deal with. We started out by choosing only Intermediates but we've come a long way since then Now, there have been projects done with sub-groups of cool, intermediate or warm to choose from. We also try to keep the price at a low number.

We consider these efforts to be projects rather than contests...there are no real prizes except for the fun we have along the way, the chance to grow a plant we might never have grown on our own, the opportunity to learn from others growing the same plant and of course the wonderful feeling when they bloom

Hope to see you in the next project

lol. That link has way too much stuff in it Daunting to even look at let alone read.

There's no better way to find out what it's all about than diving in head first and learning along the way. I'm new as well, so hopefully it will be a good rewarding experience.

It might be nice though if someone could edit the post in that Sticky to provide a summary of what a project is and how people participate. Maybe a brief description of each project and the plant(s) chosen next to each project link.

OK, in a nutshell, here's the basic info:

Our first project had 5 people involved...with our current project being #9 we are into the high 40s/low 50s for most projects.

It is not a contest, it is a way for our members to get together and learn about a new chid. Once a project starts, there are scheduled chats and also conversations in the forum thread. Plants which fit the basic criteria are discussed among the participants and either added to the "yes" list as a finalist or a "no" for whatever reason. The criteria is that the plant must be under a certain size and within certain temperature ranges. We also try to keep the price in the mid $20 range.

it's a fun way to get to know your fellow OB members and learn along the way. sometimes, the winning plant is one that a number of participants would never have tried if not for the project...and they are usually thrilled by the time the first new "anything" starts to grow
