Talking Summer Project 2009 - Ideas

I was thinking of getting this project going but since we had a hard time finding available plants for all on the last Spring project that maybe we should have a little twist for this one. I'm looking for Ideas only at this time.

Select a "slate" of plants from which we can choose. Select a vendor (or two) from each country participating. Then anyone can participate - select it from the list and purchase it from your country's vendor.

Once everyone has their respective plants, multiple threads can be started to track each variety. We would be, in a sense, voting by purchasing it. This way everyone gets their vote and we have multiple projects going simultaneously. No problems with availability. Just a thought.

Or how about setting a limit to the number of US participants? That was the big issue last project. We had plant candidats, but could not find them in large enough quantities! Sounds harsh to limit it, but all the trouble really took out some of the fun.

What I liked about chosing only one plant is that it sort of 'forced' people to grow a plant they otherwise would have never chosen. Royal, your idea of chosing a slate of plants is nice. That way we could have mini intermediate plants (as usual) as well as some larger intermediate plants for those who want bigger stuff. And it would be a nice change from the usual way of doing things.

Anyways, if you do this project before the end of summer, i'll be forced to sit this one out . I will be pretty much internetless from end of next week to late august, since I'll be at my countryhouse in France most of the time, and then spending nearly 2 weeks in Spain.

There goes Camille...our favorite jetsetter!

Dave, I first wanted to say for stepping up to the plate!

It's wonderful to see that you guys (and gals) now have enough confidence to start a project on your own

I'm always available if you have any questions but I'm sure you'll do a great job

As for your question...
when we had so much trouble finding a vendor with enough quantity here in the U.S. it was very frustrating to say the least

I was discussing it with a few of my friends and somewhere along the way a few ideas surfaced. While it might sound cruel, there needs to be a limit to the number of people who can participate (as Camille suggested). There are still ways for the extras to be involved:

More than one project can be done at one time...use the idea of the mystery project we did (without the mystery! )

Do a Cool, an Intermediate and a Warm Project, each with their own limit of 25...with the same basic rules of our previous projects

Participants would be added in a first come-first serve manner. It would be rather easy to track because the date and time of their join-request would be cataloged in the OB thread for each.

OR

Do the project the way it's always been done (the process works ) with a limited number of people. Once there are more than that number of folks interested, start a second group with a second plant.

I'm looking forward to seeing what ideas the rest of you come up with and again...

Thanks Dave

Too funny, Nicole!

I think you're gonna have to wait until Dave is ready. He'll post a thread with the official invitation

Great idea's all, I think I will leave this thread up for a week so we can gather as many Idea's as we can. Then maybe we will hold a vote on which idea to use.

Thanks Sue I may need your help setting up poles and sticky's

I know but at least it's clear now how desperate I am to have an excuse to buy at least one new orhid. I say at least one because an orchid can't travel alone. It needs TC's!
