Paramount Orchids in Alberta has 4 varieties and they are all $25CAN... though I'm nt sure what the size is.... they might all be seedlings.

I just checked the H&R website again and it says they're in 2" pots, so I would have to gather from that they aren't BS plants. That might put an interesting twist to the project. Start with a seedling. It certainly would be more long term, but it could be fun.

Are we there yet?????? Are we going to move to the next highest vote getter if the economics of the Dendrobium tetragonum don't work out? I must say I wouldn't be upset if the Bulbo makes the grade. The tetragonum looks a little large from what I have seen. There is one on ebay right now that is huge.

According to this website, this orchid is also known as another/more current name.

Regarding Den. tetragonum here is the good news !!! I just got off the phone with them and was told that even though they are in 2 inch pot they could bloom already; now they only have about 31 of them. I'm going to leave it up to Sue to contact them and try to arrange something. This way we can keep our possibilities open as far vendors.

Actually, according to Lavarack et al. (Dendrobioum and its relatives) the size ofthis species is:
var. tetragonum: PBs up to 16"
var. cacatua: up to 24", leave
var. giganteum: up to 20"
var. melaleucaphyllum: up to 12"
plus leave 1 - 3" for all of them...

I have seen several plants of this species (all var. but melaleucaphyllum) and they have always been quite large... I mentionned this since the beginning of the project... However, the reference for the projects is Orchidwiz and it is mentionned there that the species is ratehr small... Sue's and Sahkkai's plants are actually (according to them) rather small and not bigger than 10"

Hi,

I was just wondering if it does matter what variety we get?

I don't know what H&R's prices will be, but if Piping Rock's are cheaper, is getting one from there ok, even if it's a different variety??? (It's 20.00 there and shipping might be cheaper for me since it's in my state). Also, if H&R doesn't have enough as you said, I would want to make sure that it's ok to get the variety that Piping Rock has if need be.

Has anyone contacted Piping Rock? I wonder how many they actually have available?
