Default Spring 2009 Project -chat notes

We had a large crowd in the chat room last night! The total count was a 24 at one point!

So far, we've decided we would like the following chids to be in the running:

Comparettia falcata
Den tetragonum
Bulb dearei
Tblm kotoense
Haraella odorata
L bradei
Masd infracta
Aer citrata

We have lots more to go over on the existing list...BUT...we really want some additional plants to be suggested. Take a little time to search for interesting chids that fit our criteria for size, availability, price and availability, then look it up at Internet Orchid Species Photo Encyclopedia and save the link so you can show us what you'd like to suggest, either in the chat room or in this thread.

Once we have some more approved plants, I'll start a separate closed thread to start tracking the plant, it's growing and availability info and votes for each one.

Once we've exhausted ourselves and agree that there are no more suggestions coming...we'll tally up the ten chids with the most votes and those plants will go to our final poll. From there, we will each get one vote and the plant with the most votes at the end of the poll will be the plant we all purchase.

This project is our largest yet! We have an amazing 68 people involved...54 in the U.S., 7 in Europe, 6 in Canada and 1 in Australia! In the past, we've always ordered the plants from one vendor and I was able to get a discount applied to the project plant. With so many people here in the U.S. playing along this time, that is going to be nearly impossible to accomplish so...
we may have to make a change in the way things are done. It is quite possible that we will each order from any vendor of our choosing, as long as it's a plant in the same stage of growth (NEAR Blooming Size).

It is going to be of the utmost importance that when the poll is posted, we have a CONFIRMED amount of people who will be ordering. Many people who are now listed may drop out along the way which is something I hope doesn't happen but in today's world, we need to be realistic. Depending on how many confirm, there is still a chance of getting the plant from one vendor...we'll have to play it by ear this time

To make things a little easier for folks who were chatting in the middle of the night for our first chat, I'm going to schedule the next chat for this coming

Thurs March 19 at 7:00pm EST, rather than 8:00pm.

Plants rejected ??!!?? I think only the Masdevallia tovarensis was unappreciated. Everything else (see list above) was oohed and aaahed over. So we went from 45 plants to consider to 44 plants

just a comment, regarding one of the plants proposed... I have had this plant for 2 years without much success: it has grown very well but buds blasted all the time.. I have discussed with several friend groing it, and the feedback was always the same (you can also see it here in OB too): this plant needs high humidity to bloom! I use automatic misters, 4 - 5 times per day, and still no chance to see flowers opening properly...
It was not untiul I built my vivarium, that the plant started to feel very good, and has flowered twice already (in less than 4 months!)...

I am not say it is not possible to grow without vivarium, but it can be difficulkt and frustrating for many members (especially for newbies!)

just my two cents...

I only see 8 plants in the list posted by Sue so, I assume the other 36 were "rejected" or?

The Masd tovarensis didn't get much applause and the Gastrochilus somai had a somewhat mixed reaction but not enough for me to list it

We didn't do the whole list yet

Physically, I can't do the marathon chat stuff anymore so it's going to be done in 2 or 3 hr sessions.
