Neil it's not a dumb question at all. CITES is a pretty big hurdle in and of itself, and I'm sure it adds quite a bit of cost to ship to another country. Many growers don't want to be bothered with the miles of paperwork to ship out of the country so just plain don't do it. As Shirley mentioned it's easier if you can get it from a vendor at a show. If we knew what the plant was fairly soon you could ask a vendor to bring it with them to the show... sort of a pre-order.

I still think we can work this out so everyone can play.

How 'bout if we pick a winner and a runner up and the runner up is from the list that could likely supply everyone. That way folks would have a better chance of getting a plant and/or growing both plants or maybe if they already had the winner they could grow the runner up. You could just do a quick vote for the runner up on a chat and that would be it. If folks don't show up for the vote, oh well Just a thought.....

Hey Sue,
So what about seperating the US group into 2 groups, if we can find 2 vendors that have the same plant ???With even half the US group we should be able to get a discount right ?
I wish that I could offer to share this burden with you, but with Luca here 5 hours a day, it certainly cuts into my fun time. Thank goodness he loves his bouncer in the orchid room, so at least I can get things watered!

Also, perhaps instead of doing all the research first on perspective plants, we should contact vendors first to see what they might have in bulk(at least 20) and then go from there...Seems like a lot of time is wasted discussing plants that aren't found in abundance...
Just my thoughts, and lately thinking requires a lot from me!

Good idea, except for the fact that you have to consider that Sue waited something like a month to get the list from Andy's. If other growers are the same, that means posponing the project a number of weeks.

To mix yours and Zozzl's ideas, we could split US members into two groups, and when we do the final voting everyone votes on two plants, and each group gets one plant. Of course, there is the problem of people not being happy with the plant assigned to their group...

Nope...nobody will be withdrawing their name (not because of availability issues, anyway )

We'll figure it out

Okay folks...I guess I've just been having a few bad days and the whole availability issue got the better of me...sorry for the panic I caused

We will get this accomplished the way we always have in the past.

I don't want to give any names here ahead of time but if worse comes to worst, we have a U.S. member who frequently travels to Canada and is willing to bring plants up to those members who need them. From their initial arrival location, somebody in Canada would have to be willing to meet this person, collect the plants and ship them to each player.

Just letting you all know this offer has been made but I don't want to even think about having to do it that way unless it's the absolute only way to get it done.

My thanks to that member...you know who you are

As far as not beng happy with the plant a group is given if it was split into two groups, I have read in earleir post that people on previous projects that were not so sure about the choice of orchid grew to really like it when they got it and started looking after it, I obviously have ones so far I have liked the look of more than others but this will get us getting one we might not usually get and also will, for me anyway, get me learning about something really rather different. What ever is chosen I will be going into it whole heartedly which I am sure everyone else will. Everyone seems great here and I am sure everyone will agree to what works best. For the people organising this, Sue and helpers, it is one heck of a task and I, as I am sure everyone else is, am very very grateful for the oppurtunity and the inclusion in this project. Whatever is decided thank you for everyones hard work and dedication.
