LOL...David, you'll see

This thing is gonna snowball quickly...they always do!

I do most of the organizing portion of it but everybody involved pitches in...it's truly amazing!

I say yes to species only. Hybrids open up too many doors...at least with a species, we know what to expect

When I'm finished cooking dinner for the in-laws I'll go back through our previous lists of plants that didn't make it to the polls in the past and make them easily accessible to everybody

Species only sounds great. That way I get to add some more species to my collection.

Hot/Warm, Intermediate, Cool would be the breakdown...imagine the plants we'll find along the way!
We would stick to our usual size criteria.

Anybody who wants to be specific to their region can choose to vote in just that poll...while others might enter two of the projects...one for their region and an intermediate

This one will be a bit of work but after having our Sederia japonica project turn into a multi-layered event...and our circle of friends getting it accomplished...we can do anything!!!

I say we bounce around our ideas for another week or so and then we'll get down to business. With the work involved, this might very well become our last project before winter...

who's game?
Sue I'm confused...why are we voting on species that fit the bill for the condition parameters? I'd thought that this was supposed to be a mystery project...i.e. we contact a grower to provide a plant in the temperature range/size selected, and we try to figure it out from there. IOW we request that the grower send anyone requesting a "cool" plant something small, species, and cool growing (and all growers requesting "cool" get the same plant)--ditto for the other temp. selections; then those of us who are growing try to figure out what it is and see who is first to bloom it...
But to throw another wrench in the gears can we have some leeway on size for this project? I know a lot of us grow small due to space, but I've got to believe that I am not the only one who can handle something a bit larger vs. compact/mini... Perhaps we can just request that all plants come from the same temp. range and alliance? It would make it easier on the vendors as well--as you have mentioned not all might have 20x of the same plant, but if a few of us request intermediate and large or intermediate and micro-mini this might alleviate that problem, and, open the project to more people. Heck, we could just vote on an alliance of plants and let the vendors do their worst...

I've put a lot of thought into this and I think we'd be putting too much work on any vendor. They've all been great to us but I think that we'd be taking advantage of their niceness. They will already be doing extra work by changing the identifying info on each invoice.

I'd much prefer for us to do the work...we go for plants on the smaller side, they don't necessarily have to be minis

Wow! My thoughts exactly. That why I have been absent this post so far. I am totally confused here as to how this will shake out. It was confusing enough with all the previous discussions, but Sue's got a real job here to make any sense out of this, so far.

I don't do most Dendros or large, "floofy orchids". For me it's minis (like Angraecoides), Masdies, Paphs, and others that crept in somewhere along the line. See my orchid list for complete collection (usually not current.)

I guess just let us know what direcftion we're going for this one. I am all for a mystery plant, but I still feel voting on species defeats the spirit of the project.

Sue let's go back to the original idea then. You select the plants that didn't make it from previous projects and put them in a poll. We'll vote on them without knowing which one is which and we then buy them from a designated vendor or vendors in case one vendor doesn't have enough for everyone participating on the project. Is there such as orchid that will grow under most conditions and that vary from cool to warm??? or maybe we can just have one on each category and one vendor for each category. In other words; one verdor that will supply those with cool grower plants another one for intermediate plants and another one for warm plants. You would direct us to them and we will purchase the designated plant.
