Default Neofinetia falcata (Project 6b - Spring 2008) - Photo Poll Discussions

Sue & All

Had a quick exchange of ideas with Gwen, and here is what I was thinking....

We would have the general photo contest - Awesome Blossom - where all OB Members could vote, as originally planned at the start of the project. It would be nice to do it in the same format as Marty does the calendar contest. If Marty doesn't have enough time, I'd be happy to coordinate and post the photos in a poll. The top 3 photos with the most votes would get the prizes from New World Orchids. The 1st place winner would get to choose which one they wanted.

Then, I thought we could do three themed polls (only votes from people participating in the project) where the winner of each theme gets one of the Erin Pottery pots.

I am still completely bowled over that Gwen has single-handedly got us six prizes for this project!!

Here are the themes that I think could work:

Best in Bloom
Most Creative
Samurai Award (for best Japanese themed photo)

I also thought that, to be fair, the photos for the general contest and the theme contests should be different. It can be the same plant, but different photos.

People could enter just the main one, or any combination, or all of them, if they wanted.

As for deadlines, whatever you think is best. August 1st suits me, as I'm not going to pick up my Neos until June 8th. But I could also do July 1st if we want to be quicker.

What does everyone think?

Shannen, I copied your post into a new thread.

All of this sounds great to me...I'm going to copy your post into a new thread so polling conversations don't get lost amongst the rest

If we can come to a general agreement on what the different categories should be by July 1, we'll have a full month to make a final choice of what to send in for the poll.

Speaking of which...

I discussed it with Marty. I will be taking care of setting up the polls. There will be a specific email address for your photos to be sent to and that address will be a direct link to me for this project. Since I will be putting this together and am also among the participants, I think we need one important rule regarding our votes. I also think it would make it much more interesting

My suggestion is that we can not vote for our own photo...what do you guys think?

Sue, Thanks so much!! It all sound very appropriate.

I agree with the suggestion about voting rules. I would take it as a given that we shouldn't vote for our own photo.

Do people want to brainstorm potential categories and we could then poll project participants and get the top three that way?

Sooooo. . . just wanted you all to know, so you could start worrying about it.

August 1st deadline sounds great!!

We might want to go ahead and see if Marty can set up the email address for the photos? Bet some people are ready to send their's in.

Shannan's catagory list sound great.

I am so excited to see the final competition photos! That's going to be such a treat!

OK, then, if everyone is happy with the categories, lets get the email address set up so that people can start sending in photos!!

Sue, I don't know what easiest for you, but I thought maybe one address with the subject of the email to be the category the photo is to be entered in??

Then we can have 4 polls (one for each category). I hope that everyone gives each one a go - you never know!! If you don't enter, you can't win!

That's funny...I was just thinking about this myself! Great minds...

I agree...one email address (which will link to mine) with the poll listed as the subject line. I just contacted Marty regarding the address...I think he already did it for me but my brain just ain't what it use to be

I thought my display was all set to go but found the chids weren't thriving in there so have rearranged things...again!

Default UPDATE:

All members participating in our Neo Project should email their photos to me at:

blossom@orchidboard.com

All pictures will be saved in a folder on my computer and I will then set up our FOUR individual polls for the Project/Contest. Deadline for photo entries is AUGUST 1, 2008

The categories are:

Awesome Blossom (voting is open to all OB members)

Best in Bloom (Only Neo Project participants' votes will be counted)

Most Creative (Only Neo Project participants' votes will be counted)

Samurai Award (for best Japanese themed photo) (Only Neo Project participants' votes will be counted)

When you send me your pictures, please be sure you specify which (or all) of the polls you are entering with that particular picture in the subject line of the email.

Please do not email pictures to me for the polls if you are not on our Neo Project list...they will not be entered. Thank you

I can't wait to see them all! This is gonna be fantastic!

Good luck to everybody

Thanks so much Sue!! You're the greatest!

Just so that everything is clear for everyone, here is a summary of what's going to happen with this project.

Unlike other OB projects, which are primarily about growing and flowering a particular orchid, with the Neo project, we wanted to take advantage of the fact that Neofinetia can be appreciated just as much out of flower as in flower - its all down to the presentation of the plant itself.

So, this project is composed of several contests which will all be decided by OB members or project participant polls. All entries will be anonymous, thanks to Sue who volunteered to accept photos and post them in the poll for us.

Entries will be accepted until August 1st for the following:

Awesome Blossom - the main project, is the best photo (no theme necessary) of the project plant as decided by OB members (not just project participants), like we do for the calendar contest. The winner of this contest will receive a special gift package from New World Orchids!!

Best in Bloom - Photo of one of your Neofinetia in flower, or a photo just of the flowers. The winner of this contest will be decided in a special poll open to project participants. The winner will receive a pot specially made for this contest by Vic at Erin Pottery.

Most Creative - The most creative photo, be it creativity in set up, creativity in photography, whatever... let your imagination run wild!! The winner of this contest will be decided in a special poll open to project participants. The winner will receive a pot specially made for this contest by Vic at Erin Pottery.

Samurai Award - For the best Japanese themed photo in honour of the country where these awesome plants originate. The winner of this contest will be decided in a special poll open to project participants. The winner will receive a pot specially made for this contest by Vic at Erin Pottery.

To enter each of the contests, send your photo to:

blossom@orchidboard.com

and enter the name of the contest (in bold above) that you want that photo entered into. One photo can be entered in multiple contests. Or you can enter 4 different photos, one for each of the different contests. Its totally up to you, if you want to enter one, two, or all of the contests, just put the title of the contest in the subject of the email and attach your photograph. To make life simpler for Sue, please only one photograph per email.

Remember to submit your photos before 1st August. After that Sue will set up the polls and the voting will begin!!

Good luck everyone!!

Thanks Shannen...well done

All of our special thanks go out to Gwen (gmdiaz) as she was like an unstoppable force when it came to getting this project underway...and getting such a wonderful array of prizes for the "winners"

In this contest just as in life, not "winning' is unimportant...the real winners are the folks who do what they do because they love it.

Best wishes to everybody
