Adam, I don't think that looks the same as when you got it... all of those new roots are great! Its obviously happy with the conditions that you're giving it. Whether it flowered this year or not was probably decided well before you got it. I'm sure you'll see blooms next year. In the mean time, that second photo with those roots growing out everywhere is lovely!

For some last minute inspiration, here is a great link that I came across for tips on how to photograph bonsai accent plants. I think the same techniques would work really well for our orchids too!

And for some more inspiration, here is a wonderful section of photos of bonsai accent plantings, which have actually developed into an artform of their own, and are now exhibited separately in some cases:
