Default Maxillaria sanguinea

This is an alternative plant for those of you who want a fragrant Maxillaria like tenuifolia. This plant comes from Costa Rica.

This plant is potted in sphagnum moss in a 3” net pot.

Close up of the pseudobulbs.

Nice looking sanguinea Matt. It looks very similar to tenuifolia, maybe a bit smaller? You seem to have a maxillaria craze going on now. I picked up a couple myself at the orchid show recently.

It has a similar growth habit as Max tenuifolia, but just much more compact. It's on my wishlist, and I stupidly passed one up at a show on saturday because I thought it was small for the price...

Dear Patty and Camille: I do have a craziness for Maxillaria. I am in a bidding war right now for another Maxillaria. I hope I can get it without spending a fortune!

This Maxillaria obsession is finding Maxillaria that is not Maxillaria tenuifolia and miniature in size—since I have very little space. I’m also on an Oberonia kick where I’m trying to find more of these plants too.

Since my criteria is very specific, and these plants are hard to come by, I’m not going to be over run like I am with Neofinetia!

Matt, do you have Maxillaria sophronitis yet? I visited the National Capital Orchid Show over the weekend and picked up two new Maxillaria from J&L. I found the sophronitis and a juergensii and had to have them. I purchased a few other plants as well, orchid shows are just so easy and Cordelia is very helpful! I was happy to see her again and to know she is now working for the new owners.

A bidding war? Ooh I know what you’re interested in, I’m watching that one as well! There is always one more right?

I did have Maxillaria sophronitis. But I did not know how to grow it, at that time, and I lost it. I have found a couple of them online and might get it.

The one I’m bidding on, was either bid or buy it now, so I bid on it for the lower (hopefully) price. I don’t bid on plants unless it is less than a minute away from ending.

If I get this one, then I would probably get the sophronitis. Even though I avow I have no more room, these plants are like jello—they’re is always room for one more!

The Maxillaria sophronitis is very different from the others but I like it. Seems frequently available online, not the tough search for the other minis. Yep, always room for more!

Like you, I always wait until the last (3 seconds) is my rule on eBay. Good luck with the bid, hope you win!
