Default Maxillaria ferdinandiana

This is the third Maxillaria I acquired today 09/09/17 at the International Phalaenopsis Alliance, Region 10 Seminar held at Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana.

This plant is from Eric Sauer of River Valley Orchids, Dayton, Ohio. Eric was one of the presenters at the seminar.

One culture note. Eric uses New Zealand Sphagnum Moss as his plant media. He stated that this was an ideal media because: 1) it provides consistent moisture to the roots, 2) will require less watering.

This plant looks more like a Maxillary tenuifolia but it does not get as large and grows out, as opposed to tenuifolia's habit of growing up.

Is this a cool grower? It looks really good...but then, I'd expect nothing less from Eric.

Cool Maxillaria Matt! I purchased my first Maxillaria last month and I really like the little plant. My plant is a Maxillaria uncata, a cute miniature and it flowered last week.

I had never really looked at Maxillaria before, have you grown others? Your new plants are nice and interesting, thanks for sharing them.

Yes, this one is also a cool grower. All three of the plants I acquired yesterday were all cool growers. But unlike my Furan, they require moisture year round!

Hi Patty! I have a Maxillaria tenuifolia for several years. It started out as a small plant, but it has grown considerably. I repotted it in NZ Sphagnum Moss, a couple of years ago, a third of the plant broke off, potted it into another pot.

I also own a Maxillaria uncata, got it a year ago. It has also flowered this year for me.

Now I have these three. That is the extent of my Maxillaria. At the seminar yesterday, Eric Sauer brought several varieties of Maxillaria. These three were the smallest ones. According to Eric, these three would be considered miniatures or small. Other plants were very large in comparison. Other than the tenuifolia, I'm going to grow them with my Furan space but keep them moist through the winter.

Hi Matt! The tenuifolia is the only Maxillaria I've considered growing though the size of it has kept me from purchasing one. A specimen size plant is amazing especially in bloom.

I stumbled upon the uncata while searching eBay, just thought it was a nice miniature and I liked the look of the plant. I thought I would give one a try. My plant is potted in leca in a small net pot. I keep a saucer under it and have it in my greenhouse/shelving unit with high humidity.

They are nice plants, not many miniatures so that is probably a good thing for me.
