Yes, you need to water and feed the plant in its growing stage to help it gain more energy to produce spikes.
Temperature, humidity and air movement must be constant.

Really Bud? Hmm, when I click the links they open up in a different window but I'll repost in a bit.

I definitely taught myself the hard way that these guys are thirsty and wanted to be watered more than I was giving them. Still I was really happy that even then they still gave me two spikes. It is great that these guys are happy to bloom more than once a year.
