Zygopetalum Louisendorf, possible spike? Male
Default

Just back from two weeks holiday to find the blooms have opened. There are only two blooms on the spike and just one spike on this growth, but happy anyway. There is no scent, unfortunately. I've noticed this new growth is getting black and I don't know what causes this. It feels hard and plump, not rotten. Any idea why this happens?

Don't know why it is getting black -could be rot, I hope not. Maybe someone else will know. Lovely blooms though, they might start to smell as they get a bit older.

Very nice! I'm not sure about the black but I would possibly treat with an antibacterial of some sort just to be safe.

My Zygo just bloomed this week too! I will post a thread with the blooms. Mine were scented as soon as they opened but it increased for a few days after. Yours are very nice.

I guess I could treat her with a systemic fungicide. I just asked the vendor what it could be. Hopefully he knows the answer.

Someone had a very nicely scented zygo at the orchid society meeting. Perhaps these must be smelled before one buys them.

Nice coloured Zygo! About the black is it Dry or mushy? If it is dry I would not worry too much about it.. as long as when you water you make sure the bottom of the p/bulb does not get wet or stay wet too long.
By the way How do you water?

The black part is dry and tough, not mushy.
I water submerging the pot into water and leaving it there for some minutes.
Water level never reaches the bottom of the bulbs (or at least I try to avoid it).
