Anyone have any Telipogon experience?

I would have guessed that Fernandezia subbiflora would be the easiest of the 3 available from Ecuagenera. They do come from even lower elevations than the other 2 do. But again, they are not heat tolerant in the least bit. I did some research on the area where Fernandezia subbiflora grows, and have found that for a region as low in elevation as where it is found, the temperatures are still surprisingly cool.

Unfortunately, I was broke at the time and could not try my hand at Fernandezia subbiflora. Again, I would love to try this species out in the future.

Yes, Pontus has some great plants. He posts on another forum where I'm a member. Honestly, his posts might be the reason I know what Telipogon and Fernandezia are.

I saw a Teli. hutchisonii in bloom posted the other day. They had it growing in a pot, which is interesting because everyone says they MUST be mounted.

While I'm no one to judge because I've never grown Telipogon hutchinsonii before, I will say with certainty that blooms on any individual specimen from any species of orchid are not necessarily indicative of a healthy plant that's thriving.

That's not to say that "all Telipogons must be mounted", however. And it definitely doesn't necessarily mean the person who posted with a potted Telipogon species has an unhealthy or dying orchid as well.

It's possible some can be grown potted, I just simply don't have that kind of experience at the moment to say with any kind of certainty whether Telipogons must be mounted or not.

All I know is that the species I currently grow is best grown mounted. I've tried growing this species potted and it didn't work out.

I've read in many places where they say it is next to impossible to get the correct watering schedule for these when grown potted. Even the "experienced" growers of these all seem to grow them mounted. I just found it interesting that a few days after we were talking about that species and the best growing medium for the genus as a whole that I would find someone blooming it in a pot.

Check this out! I got one of the Telipogon antioquianus divisions to produce a spike!

This is testament not only to this species' hardiness in cultivation, but it unfortunately also demonstrates how just because an orchid is in bloom that it doesn't necessarily mean that it is a healthy plant.

Keep in mind, my Telipogon antioquianus divisions are still recovering from severely damaged root systems.

That's awesome!! Where are the pictures!? Even if it is just a spike, I'd be interested in seeing what the plant looks like and how it's growing.

In case you're wondering, yes, they're being grown outdoors. The 1st photo is an outdoors shot.

2nd photo shows the newly emerging spike. It's difficult to tell the difference between the spike and the leaves, but trust me, they're not leaves.

3rd photo shows the difference between the newly forming roots and the older dead roots. Notice that there were no older roots alive at all.

Grrr!!! Just came home to find a large snail that ate one of the smaller divisions on a different mount than the one I posted a pic of!!!!!

Threw the snail into the snake tank.

It's official, Telipogons are truly snail/slug magnets. Slugs and snails will actively seek them out because they're soft and fleshy. Don't be fooled into thinking that these snails are coming across Telipogons by happenstance. This is simply not the case. I've never had so many snails visit the areas where my orchids grow outdoors until now. They particularly like to visit the Telipogons at night when the snails and slugs are most active. During the day, they hide out of sight somewhere nearby where it's dark and moist.
