Default Stenia pallida - a fan type orchid with a sac shapped lip

Nice small, pseudo-bulb less orchid native of the Amazon region. The lip forms an intriguing sac. It would be interesting watch the pollinator doing his job to understand the interaction between the lip structure and the pollinator!

Very nice!

Yeah, it would be interesting to know what the pollinator is and how it interacts with the flowers. I've always wondered about why the lip would be in the shape of a sac for the genus Stenia.

Looks kind of cozy to me! Like a lounging bathtub with a headrest.

Just saying! Couldn't help it- that was my first thought. Like when I first saw paphs when I was little I was convinced they were blood-sucking aliens.

Thanks for sharing Mauro- beautiful flower and shots as usual.

Wonderful pescoroid. I've been hunting this one down for a while.

I agree that it would be interesting to see how the pollinator interacts with the flower. I think it is a variation of the capture system seen in Paphs, where the only way out of the pouch is through a duct where the pollinia are located.

I agree, Carl. The lip has a denticulate structure inside that is there most likely to prevent anything inside the sac from getting out through the wrong way!
