Question Lycaste and Angulocaste hybrid origin

Hello everyone,

I bought sone lycaste and Angulocaste hybrids, but I'm not sure if the names are correct (i.e. if the names exist), so my question is: is there any database where I can find the hybrid names with their parent species / hybrids ?
The plants I am talking about were sold as
Angulocaste red tulip
Lycaste Wyld wong
Lycaste Azteke Gold
Lycaste Terra Sunshine
Thanks for any hint or link !

All the best,

Michael

Welcome to OB!

Here is a link to the RHS International Orchid Register. This is where all registered hybrids are listed.

Hello Ted,

And thanks for the link ! I can't find any of the above hybrids in the databese, unfortunately. However, I also can't find Lycaste Wyld dragon, a hybrid which has been wrote about in Oakley's Lacaste, Ida and Anguloa, so I'd assume the name might be correct?

Oh, you're right - I don't know which mistake I madxe the first time. Does this mean the hybrid names are not valid ? Or are there hybrids that are not registered ? I think I should ask the seller where he got his plants and what the parentage is. As far as wyld wong is concerned I think maybe asking Mr. Oakley might help, as this should be hybridized at Wyld court orchids, I suppose.

What works best for me if I do not get a hit the first time due to possible misspelling is to put a few letters in the genus and a few letters in the Grex and search through the list that pops up.

I found Angulocaste Wyld Dragon by doing the following:

For the Genus, I typed in "cast"
For the Grex , I typed in "dragon"

The correct name was diplayed in the list of everything that matched those letters. It can be a lengthy process, but it works.

Hi Michael and welcome to orchid board.

Sometimes nursaries sell orchids under trade names which are not registered. Here in the UK a lot of orchids come from the Netherlands & Germany and most that you find in the garden centers just have trade names and even many of the websites you can buy from have them under trade names.

In some cases I have seen orchids which are definately slightly different hybrids sold together under the same trade name (and even sharing a pot in some cases).

Unfortunately trade names don't really tell you anything about what it really is

Hallo Michael, where did you buy your plants from? The best would be to contact the nursery directly and ask them if they know the real name of these hybrids. Indicate that they do not appear in RHS!

Dear Rosie, dear Kavanaru,

Thanks for your reply ! I got the plants from a nearby nursery that will stop business and sells part of their private collection. I would not expect "fantasy" names as a problem associated with Lycastes, as there are not available at garden centers - I would have expected that there might be a different database including maybe more recent hybrids, or ones that have not been registered. I'd assume that the plants I got came from Japan, but of course I'm not sure.
I'll ask the seller and let you know whatr was the answer - if nothing comes out I'll have to wait for flowers :-)

Michael

Hi Michael, I have seen plants with "fantasy" names from serious nurseries in Germany... Very often these nurseries buy flasks from bigger nurseries or mass producers, and tehy come with these "funny names". However, I admit that the reason Iasked is because Lycaste is not the kind of plants that you normally see with those names.
Very often too (have seen that also from serious nurseries in Germany) the plants have the clonal name on the label, but not the actual hybrid name.

Even though, if the plants comes from Japan or other countries, the hybrids must be registered at RHS... If they are not there, they are simply not registered!

On the other hand, if you cannot identify the plants via the vendors, it will be almost impossible to identify them only by seeing the flowers!
