Lyc. Shonan Harmony x Lyc. Auburn pics and ?s - Orchid Board

This is my very first Lycaste. I have had it for probably about 3-4 weeks. I purchased it from a local vendor and he always has pretty neat stuff. Anyway, it has three growths that I am wondering if they are new growths or possible flower spikes. I am hoping for spikes

Also, if anyone can tell me anything about this guy, such as what medium it might prefer, that would be helpful too. I traced the crosses back so that I think the two main species used were Lyc. macrophylla and Lyc. skinneri. I got confused looking at them because supposedly macrophylla is terrestrial whereas skinneri is either lithophytic or epiphytic. So, I am a bit confused...

Don't know what that is, but it's a cool looking plant. Big bulbs.

Yes, and the flowers are pretty interesting too! The bulbs are a funny shape too and look very old.. hard to describe. Anyway, thanks for checking it out. Cross your fingers for spikes!

Hi JennS,

Your pic appears to show spikes. Your hybrid, to the best of my knowledge, is unnamed. Flower it, get it awarded and name it!

Shonan Harmony is ~ 80% skinneri, 10% cruenta and 10% macrophylla. Shonan Harmony has had Auburn as a "grandparent" and "great grandparent". Sorry, I don't know the technical wording.

Someone is doing some serious breeding. Will you please reveal the source of your plant? I might be interested, too!

Small/medium size bark mix works well. Avoid using a pot which is too large. Lycaste prefers to be pot bound.

Congrats on the spikes - it is spiking in the time frame of the skinneri parent(s).

Your pbulbs look great except for the brown one but that is how they look when they die, it is not a fungal/bacterial problem, just a yukky look problem. Twist it off after the bloom or during the repot.

I grow my skinneri and macrophylla as damp in the winter, not soggy, and then all the water and fertilizer they can handle during the summer. They will love the morning sun.

Repotting in an azalea or bulb pan pot would be best for this plant, plus p'nuts in the bottom rather than this deep pot.

I have a Shonan Harmony compot I'm growing out but it will be a long time before I see bloom. Please show pictures when this blooms so I can be envious. After you tell Stitz where you got it, please share with me too :>)

Wow! I am so excited! I can't believe I got the best one out of the five or so that he had. I got it from a local vendor called "City Oasis" that is located in Orlando, FL. I don't have the number with me, but I will try to find it to let you all know. The guy there actually just imports his stuff and I try to check in there every other week or so. He had about 4 or 5 of these then. He always shows me the coolest stuff he has. Anyway, I can ask him if he can get anymore for you guys. There was one in bloom when I got mine that had a pretty whitish colored bloom, but none had spikes except this one. I thought they were growths at the time. ANyway, I will get more info from him, and check the tag as it has the original growers info too (might not be in english though) and post more when I find out, plus pics as they develop!

If anyone is interested the guy who I got this from still has two left at his store. He is not interested in shipping them, but if anyone wants one, or two, I would be happy to pick them up and ship them. Just let me know. One has a flower on it, the other does not. They are priced at $20, plus shipping.
