Zygopetalum jugosum? Male
Default Zygopetalum jugosum?

The plant was labeled/sold as Zygopetalum jugosum from Alvim Seidel Orquidario Catarinense, in 2005. The lip measures 2.0 cm long, 1.5 cm at the widest. I don't know what I have!

I also have a Zygopetalum pabstii purchased in 2006. I expect it to flower in the next cycle.

Is the picture above a Z. pabstii? There is no chance that I switched labels.

Zygopetalum experts? What's your opinion?

Dear Stitz,

Sorry, but odds are you did switch the labels. The image you posted is probably Zygopetalum pabstii although the lip isn't fully developed. the attitude of the sepals and petals are a good match.

Zygopetalum jugosum is correctly Pabstia jugosa, a shorter-statured species with pure white sepals and highly contrasting blue marked petals.

Hope that helps, Eric

Eric,

Perhaps, you didn't comprehend this sentence:

I know the circumstances; you don't. If mislabeling occurred (yes, very likely!), it happened with the vendor, not with me.

Wow, is that your picture, or one off the web? I love this flower, and can't find it anywhere in the U.S.. I can't get over how much the petals, column, and lip look like a snow owl! If this is your plant, and you ever have a division that you want to sell/trade, please let me know....this one's near the top of my "want list". Sorry guys, didn't mean to hijack the thread!

Phrogz3,

Thank you for your input. It's a little more complicated. My supplier, Alvim Seidel, saw the Zygopetalum genus a little differently than many of his contemporaries and virtually everyone today.

It is important to remember the context.
