Trader Joe's Find: a Galeopetalum (maybe 'Giant'?)
I saw a few people post about finding interesting orchids at Trader Joe's. Initially I had thought it was just a thing outside of where I live, but turns out it wasn't!
I got this Zygo. triste for $17.99 (not including tax). Guy looks a little rough in a few places and it's medium was really dry but it should do fine after a few weeks of regular watering and some Kelpak + SuperThrive.
I took pictures of the tag that came with it if anyone is curious about the wholesale vendor.
(If the pictures look a little dark, I tried to reduce the file size of the images and they wound up a little darker.)

Unfortunately, no.
I knew I'd seen the flower and the genus name somewhere, remembering it was "zygo-something", and I looked to see any vendors were carrying a "zygo-something" orchid and I saw OrchidWeb was carrying the same looking plant and it was Zygopetalum triste.

It is beautiful, but I think you have a hybrid.

It looks more like a zygo hybrid to me, potentially with some galeottia in it.

I remember years ago the hybrid Zygolum Louisendorf popping up at the NJ Matsui Nursery.

You know, you both are probably right. I just looked around and someone by the name of Ken Joy made a post about a zygo hybrid he found at Trader Joes.

I found this Galeopetalum Giant at Trader Joe’s. (I can’t believe the orchids that are coming to the retail market now.) I originally thought this was a Zygopetalum, but Galeopetalums are a hybrid between Galeottia and Zygopetalum. The Galeottia part reduces the size of the plant.

I bought a couple of nice Matsui Phals. last year. I went to the Web site to find a contact to see whether I could get IDs. It says prominently on the Web site they won't ID plants.
