Upside-down Zygopetalum NOID - Orchid Board

This one was a Trader Joe's NOID purchase while on vacation. Wouldn't have been my first choice, but my roommate declared that I wasn't allowed to bring any more 'chids into the house unless I got this one. Ironically, it has turned out to be one of my easiest growers and most faithful bloomers. This time around there are four spikes.

Odd, though: the latest blooms are opening upside-down.

Anyone else ever have this happen? Also, if someone has any ideas on the hybrid ID, I'd be happy to hear them!

Zygos tend to do that if they are moved when in bud. Also, a lot of the ones at our local orchid nursery are like that so it might have just been the weather this year.

Even upsidedown its' still very pretty. Love the colors

I got two zygos last year in spike. When the flowers started opening, some of them were upside down. Sounds commone for zygos.

Kudos to you for having such luck with them! Like susanne, I haven't had much luck with the two I have since I bought them.

I always find it interesting how folks can have such wildly differing results with the same plants depending on their individual growing conditions. I'd be willing to bet that a lot of people on here have much more "appropriate" orchid-friendly growing areas than mine. Maybe I just got lucky with a strong hybrid.

It is amazing, isn't it? I guess when you consider all the factors that differ - temperature, humidity, light, potting medium, water, fertilizer, whether or not you talk to them...

Everybody does things a little different!

I bought a Bollopetalum at a local plant show and it did the same thing.

Beautiful flowers, though. How fragrant is it?

I love Zygo's!! They are one of the few types of orchids that I have never had a problem reflowering.Yours is very nice though Stephen, love the dark colouration!!
