Getting ready to get started
Default Getting ready to get started

Hello! Newcomer to orchids and newcomer to the board. I have never had an orchid personally, but love them. My wife has raised several in pots and been relatively successful. They were NOIDs from Kroger (grocery). She kept some for several years. We are building a new house and I want to create a space (or two) for some orchids. We have a sunroom facing southwest that I would like to use. We won’t be finished there until late winter, but I wanted to dip my toe in with a couple plants before we move. We are going to our first show at the end of the months and will talk to some from the society, view a seminar, and, of course, buy my first plants!

Welcome to the OB! You're in a fortunate position to be building a house and having the opportunity to actually plan for a good space for orchids!

My vote, FWIW, would be oncidium tribe members. That light should easily work for them and they are easy bloomers.
Knowing your location will help us make suggestions. Maine light is different from New Mexico light.

And welcome.

Thanks! Central Kentucky. My wife will insist on opening the room up during spring and fall, so I’ll have some days with cooler temps (probably no lower than 60). I will have 9x6 windows on the southeast and southwest walls.

I think that temperature is fine. I have many oncidiums because they are very "intermediate." But they do like water so bear that in mind.
