Default Greetings from South Florida

Hi everyone!

I am not entirely new to forums but I am new to being a newb on the forum's subject, lol. My most time-consuming hobby is certainly my fish tanks, but I am beginning to dabble in orchids once again.

I am not entirely new to orchids since I am lucky enough to live in a place where some species can live on a porch with basic care and absolutely thrive. That's how I did orchids over ten years ago and yes, it seemed successful at the time. This time around, I'm hoping to do better... though I am still an outdoor grower and want a collection that will be happy on the screened in porch.

Recently, a fishy friend of mine, (meaning one of my best online buddies who is also a fish keeper), started a vivarium for a fancy little bug called the Orchid Mantis. It's a cute little guy, and knowing my location, my friend turned to me with help in caring for an orchid so he can provide this bug with its favorite flower. Hmmm, I'm no pro at orchids but I felt I could point him in the right direction. Then, of course, I became jealous... because this guy had orchids, and I did not.

Surely some folks here have heard of RF Orchids, and this is my favorite, but not my only local orchid nursery. So, I headed on over and got a few so as to start a new collection. I do not currently have the time or place for Vandaceous species, so picked up a few Phals and a couple of Cats. Wish me luck!

Welcome to the Orchid Board! And good luck!

If you have outdoor space on a porch or patio you can easily grow some Brassavola nodosa and Tolumnias.

It's been a long time and my connection has grown to 22 plants.

Brassavola nodosa is at the top of this weekend's shopping list.

The Redland International Orchid Festival is in my city this weekend and I got a gift card for Mother's Day.
