All I did was go to the store to see if they had good media for s/h for the canes I have coming, and I accidentally bought two more P. Sogo Yv3 so I can have a big display, and two Paphs for the waterfall....

Very common for aerial roots to die if potted or covered with moss so don't feel bad.

If you really want to see a nice selection of plants, check with the local orchid society to see when the orchid show(s) will be. (Most shows seem to be in the fall through spring in many areas.)

You know if you start to run out of room, you could get a used 90gal fish tank or an Exoterra tank and create a nice orchidarium and stock it with micro-mini orchids.

Have you resisted going to the Orchid Trail? It's worth a trip just to see the collections greenhouse (#7). Amazing, awesome, blissful experience wandering through that greenhouse.

My scented orchids arrived!

I had impulse bought a bunch of very inexpensive orchids with compelling pictures and descriptions including ones I'd heard of from the fragrance list here. They were listed as "Seedling (1)" and "Single Cane" size, so I was actually fairly pleased two have one with two canes and a third growing, and the other single cane to already have a good start to roots going.

They are super tiny, which I should have inferred from the pictures, but I was definitely surprised. They seem to be both really healthy but really little! They got potted up in hydro rocks in a communal tray with the other plants I moved to my implementation of a semi hydro system so they could try to root more on the heating pad. I hit them with a little root hormone fertilizer I happen to have around at a very low strength, and now the patience begins. I have absolutely no idea how long of a wait to expect. The Sharry Baby had more growths than I was expecting, but was much tinier!

CAVEAT EMPTOR!

I recommend against doing a "wholesale" switch to S/H culture. Considering the loss of existing roots and need to grow new ones, it puts the plants under a lot of stress, and may not be the best idea for someone starting out.

I usually recommend that folks switch over ONE PLANT that they have otherwise mastered growing, and see how it goes. Once you've adjusted to the change in needs, THEN try something else.

And ALWAYS it's best to transplant a plant just as new roots are emerging from the base of the plant, hastening the recovery.

Caution noted. I'm only repotting purchased plants in moss that I consistently kill, and brand new plants with no roots at all in SH. I am eager for the method because it fits the type of culture options I have and my tendency to fuss very well. I'm sure I'll lose something at some point, and won't cry at all

One more piece of advice: S/H culture is not necessarily the best way to rescue a plant.

Because of the need to "upgrade" the root system to the new conditions, ANY repotting is stressful and because it tends to be SO much different from the "old conditions", moving into S/H can be extremely so.

That said, if the plant already has no roots, and you have the wherewithal to keep it alive until it does, pot it up any way you want, as whatever new roots it grows will be adapted to those conditions.

Oh my gosh I did the exact same thing today! I went to the store to buy new potting media and walked out with 2 new rescue orchids that need some TLC. The problem is I DON'T have room for more orchids. I have increased by collection by 4 orchids just this week... it's seriously becoming a problem. Talk about zero impulse control...
