,
new fellow here...but grown for 25 yrs. Anyways, when I first started growing, a friend gave me a Blc Norman's Bay 'Lows'. Naturally I killed it, but now, years later I am trying to locate one. Anyone know where I might look? It's a sentimental thing..Thanks!

Thanks, Jim
But I am having a difficult time locating this orchid - I couldn't find it in the The International Orchid Register (as per the RHS - Royal Horticultural Society)
So this one is a tough nut to crack ..

Hi and welcome

Funny you should mention this orchid!
When I went to the WOC and met up with one of our OB moderators, justatypn (Cheryl), her sole mission at the show was to locate a Norman's Bay...for sentimental reasons!

The best we could do was to get a hybrid with Norman's Bay as a parent from Indian River Orchids in Vero Beach (I think) , Florida.
They don't have a web site but here's their contact info:
INDIAN RIVER ORCHIDS

The vendor told us it is very rare to find this plant in circulation.

Merkles Orchids has one in their collection but not for sale. You could contact them and see if perhaps you could obtain a division. Another possible source is Alan Bachrach, who has a list of catts in his collection with the offer to trade or sell divisions. Although his website hasn't been updated in several years, he may still have it or be able to point you in the right direction.

Good luck!

Hi Elroy
Funny, I have been growing orchids for 25 years now too and in my early orchid days I also had Blc. Norman's Bay, but the clone 'Gothic'. Some time later I also got 'Lows'. At a certain point I moved to apartment and had to give away my little collection. Both were gone. Two weeks ago I was chatting with an old grower here and knew he still has Norman's Bay 'Gothic' in his collection. I immediately tried to trade a piece of it but it's been hard to convince him! It is a classic orchid, mother, among so many others, of Blc Oconee and Blc. Dark Waters two orchids I also am very fond of!
Wish you luck!

Welcome Elroy. My memory is terrible these days, but for some reason I seem to remember that this hybrid was available from Carter & Holmes a while back. You might check their catalog esp the dug-ups section.

Wow!
Thanks for all the replys...I am a florist by trade, and Mrs. Beasley from the Shreveport Orchid Society used to come by and sell blooms to us for corsages...she brought me the Norman's Bay plant, and the 'sickness' caught on! I'll try to post some pics, as I figure out how to do it.
