Hi all. I reside in Oceanside, CA about three miles in from the coast. I know the basics of how not to kill my orchids, but that's about it, although I have years of gardening experience. My youngest daughter buys orchids for her home and her husband's biz - and when the blooms expire, she tosses them. I just hate this practice and have decided to start taking in her castaways and make myself knowledgeable about orchids. I'm most interested in growing the varieties that can handle growing outside. I fell upon this web site while scanning Pinterest reading about vivariums, something else I'm interested in learning about. I look forward to learning from you and sharing our experiences.

Hello and welcome! I have to agree with you in that I also hate the idea of disposable orchids, and you're wonderful to be saving them. It does sound like you could end up with quite a big collection, though!

Thank you Mountaineer! Yes, this has been my daughter's practice for about 3 years now. Up until recently, I didn't reside close enough to rescue them. Anyway, her loss, my gain and if I end up with too many, I can share with others who enjoy growing them.

A great recycling practice is to bloom them and give them as gifts! Welcome again.

Yea! But show them off to your daughter first.
