Default Hello from Mackay Queensland

Hi all! Orchid noob here, sometimes known as Kevin. I know nothing, other than I'm getting addicted to orchids! I love the wonderful flowers that they produce.

Many years ago I had a friend that used to grow them and I would go around to his place to photograph them. He has now passed but I seem to have caught the bug. I have built a shade house / greenhouse which is quickly filling up with all sorts of shade plants.

Today I bought an orchid I am not familiar with. Can someone help me ID it please? The tag has faded and the nursery fellow wasn't sure what it was either. It has a nice new flower stalk about to bloom. The only writing on it that I can read is "Golden Afternoon". Going by the leaves, it looks a bit like an Encyclidia?

Welcome, Kevin!

It looks to me more like an Oncidium alliance hybrid. Most Encyclia have fewer and more rigid leaves, from the top of the pseudobulb, and most flower from the top of the pseudobulb.

Welcome! Definitely looks like an Oncidium. The Encyclia I'm familiar with form their spike from the top of the pseudobulb, not the base.

Thanks for the welcome guys! And thanks for the ID. Oncidium it is then. It will be exciting to see the little flowers come out for the first time.

Welcome to OrchidBoard

Here is a link to Oncidium Golden Afternoon. Maybe you can compare it when your plant blooms.
