Hi, I'm a newbie...
A newbie to growing Orchids and this site. I have two Terrestrial Orchids and really need to learn about them. The old flowers have died along with the two stems on each plant. Recently heard you should trim them...HOW??? Any and all advice would be miuch appreciated.

Weclome!
Orchids go through growth phases, and sometimes loosing leaves is normal. It would really help if we knew what kind they are, do they have tags? Pics are good too!

Thanks for all the replies! I will definitely take pics and post them. Good news, I think, they have new sprouts of leaves. I need to find the nursery tag that came with them but I know they are terrestrial and fire is in the name. They do not look like any pics I've seen so far.

It's not the leaves that have died, in fact they look great, it's the two stems that shoot up tall that the flowers grow on. I will post pics soon, thanks.

The flower spikes will die after a while. When they turn brown cut them close to the plant and new growth should form at the base. I only have Reed stem epidendrums so this advise may not be whats good for yours.

I think cutting the old spike is a safe bet for just about any type orchid. I just hesitate to give that advice right off the bat, cause certain ones can be coaxed to re-bloom, or propagated from spike cuttings.

I got it from Walmart...actually two of them. Both had the same issue. There are new sprouts coming up and I did cut the dead shoots and will see what happens. They were both completely dead and dried out.

Good news...my Orchids are thriving since i cut the dead shoots off! They look so healthy now and each have two new, growing fast shoots. Thanks so much, everyone, for the replies to my plea for help! I have yet had a chance to take pics...I do animal rescue and have two babies, 3 cats and 3 foster dogs so time is limited. But thank you!
