Default Greetings from Arizona!

Hello everyone,

After "stalking" the board for a few months I've finally decided to join. I've kept orchids for a few years now, fairly successfully considering I live in the desert. Originally from Western NY, I now realize it would have been MUCH easier to tackle this hobby there than it is here, but I do love a challenge.

Like most, I started by receiving a phalaenopsis as a gift, it did pretty well so of course that became my husbands gift of choice. Not complaining! Before too long I had 5-6 in varying stages and once I was able to get them to successfully re-flower, decided to expand my horizons.

The next gift was from Sunset Valley Orchids, a 'Witchcraft' from the Catasetinae alliance. Followed by an 'After Dark" Catasetum. You see where this is going, right? I'd pick up anything unusual I'd see locally and for Christmas received a gift certificate to SVO which resulted in eleven new additions, most all Cattleya. As I was starting to run out of space in the 'best' orchid growing window in our house, I decided to take this obsession one step further and purchased a 36x18x36 Exo Terra and turned that into an orchid terrarium, with all of the latest additions. It has been quite the learning experience, but thankfully after a few weeks in their new home, the plants all seem to be thriving.

My goal is to eventually feel comfortable enough to turn the terrarium into more of a 'living jungle' than the basic plants on shelves that it is now, I'm hoping to learn enough to feel confident in mounting a few of these beauties and turning this giant terrarium into a work of art. My other hobby is reptile keeping, primarily gecko species, so I have two young day geckos coming in this week to grow up and move in eventually.

I'm excited to join this board and continue learning!

Hi MG319! I'm fairly new to interacting with folks here on the board as well. Also in AZ. Where about in AZ are you? I'm in the SE valley. I have moved from the Midwest to AZ 2X now and each time, all my thriving orchid collections just die off once I get here in AZ. Frustrating! This is now my third attempt to build up a thriving collection of different orchids. Now I am somewhat succeeding in growing them in aquariums. PM me sometime. Maybe we can trade tips and plants at some point.

Why do ur orchids die once you take then to AZ? I just moved from San francisco to Palm desert california and I'm soo afraid of my orchids dying in the summer heat/sun. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that if I set up a shade cloth and have automatic misters that they will be fine and hopefully thrive if I can get it humid enough. Right now ( 2/20/15) I have some dendrobiums, Cattleyas, rhynochostylis hanging outside on my orchid tree where they get filtered light. I soak them every morning for 20minutes, but I'm thinking over the summer I'll soak them for 1 or 2 hours. I also spray them with the hose 1 to 3 times during the day.

Plodde, most of my orchids were all grown indoors under lights. I think the move itself was traumatic because of having to be packed and cooped up in a box in the truck for however long it took for us to drive here. Also, I was not able to control the humidity in their environment once I got them here the second time around. The first trip though, I lost about 80 orchids since the moving company lost my packed box. Was not a happy camper. Looks like you are doing just fine with how you are keeping them right now. Good luck to you. I'm trying to pay better attention to them this time.

Romeomffn, nice to "meet you"!

I'm in Litchfield Park (as west as you can get!) myslf. Would love to chat and trade tips.

I'll have to get some photos posted of my terrarium, can't believe how well the plants are doing since moving in. Strangely, my phaleonopsis seem perfectly happy without any extra attention paid to humidity. Think I'll add another terrarium sometime and play around a bit and see if they can be even happier than they seem now!

Welcome. Terrariums and orchids are a good mix. I have seen a few cool ones on here. I keep Fish tanks myself. I have a 100 Gal and a Planted 80Gal. They helps keep some humidity in the house.
