I am new to Orchid Rescue!
Question I am new to Orchid Rescue!

Hi all, my name is Jenny and I am from the Dallas TX area.
Last year I got breast cancer and I received two orchid plants while in the hospital. I threw one away not knowing it was not dead. I still have the other one and now I have added 8 more (from Lowes for about 3.00 each) I think I need to rescue them.

Anyway, that is what I typed in google search and that is how I came to be here.

Where do I start learning what to do to make these beautiful plants grow?

I thought I would always be rescuing basset hounds but now I have added orchids (and african violets and an organic garden)

Thank You!

fellow survivor! Everyone here is very nice and more than willing to share their knowledge and experiences. On this board is a sticky "The Phal. abuse ends here", it is rather long but loaded with info. and well worth reading. Just post any questions you have and you will get help.

As a fellow rescuer my first orchid was a gift and the second a rescue. Having had lots of plants for most of my life I didn't do much research and honestly was lucky not to kill it. Then I realized my first orchid had not set another spike in the 2 years I'd had it so I started buying books. I wish I'd found this forum sooner! For me the books lead to trial and error as far as what works for me, and my first orchid didn't make it. I'm happy to report that my rescue is now thriving and has set a flower spike after surviving my mistakes (and spider mites) it only took 3 years but its so worth it! I defiantly have caught the orchid bug and I'm glad to have it, such rewarding plants. The thread mention in a previous post was very helpful and I find that looking at all my orchids every few days helps notice changes and catch possible problems early.
Happy growing

Welcome!! I'm a bit of a newbie, too, and have found the OB to be VERY helpful. I agree- read the sticky "the phal abuse stops here"- lots and lots of information there to help you with your rescues. I have several rescues myself, including 2 new ones from the clearance rack at Lowes ($1 apiece, and they were the best looking ones). Best of luck!

Haha! Yup, forgot about that one, too! You can actually see pics of some of my rescues in that thread.
