New from Long Island
Hi everyone,
I have been using a lot of info from this board and thought it was time to join up. I am the head gardener on a big estate on Long Island, NY. I have been growing stuff all my life and recently took this job. One of my new responsabitlies is keeping the rag tag bunch of Orchids going here. I have one room in the greenhouse I have dedicated just to growing Orchids. I have recently purchased a lot of Phal. types and got some bargain dendrobiums. Cattleyas are also 'in-da-house"
I was trying to post some photos but it wont let me.

Hello, and WELCOME to OrchidBoard! I believe it takes about five (5) posts to be able to post a picture. I'm sure everyone will look forward to seeing the orchids you're taking care of. Lots of friendly people here, so have fun...BettyE

Welcome, I actually think you can post pictures right away, it just takes a few posts to be able to link to something outside of the OB.
Where in Long Island is the nursery located?

It's a private house on what I think they call the Gold Coast. We are near Oyster Bay.
Thanks for the welcomes.

 Welcome to the Orchid Board!
You will find very informative, very creative, extremely friendly people here who love to answer questions.
There seems to be some debate as whether you can post pics; even some moderators have weighed in and there is still some misunderstanding. I think if you go through the paperclip attachment at the top of the message you can attach right away - I know you cannot list a URL until after 5 posts to do away with spammers. But if you use the attachment icon, you can only load smaller files, maybe one or two pics at a time. Often I get booted out of the download server because the files are too big. If I just load a pic or two it will download them. If you have a large file to download, wait until you can post a URL and do it that way or you will be at it for hours.
That my worth!
Have a great time on the board - hope that Sandy was not too rough on you!

Yes okay that worked
This is the "Orchid Room" in the greenhouse. I put the Palms up for shade since no one could decide on suitable cloth and that has been working well for me. That is a Southeast facing window.
My Phals are all spiking
I try and keep 55 at night and 70 deg./70% RH during the day but quite often it goes up to 80F.
This from the shipment we just made to the main house.
Sandy pretty much wrecked the grounds at this place. We had a LOT of mature trees down. The snow a couple of days later was almost worst for the garden wiping out a lot of hollies and Rhododendrons. We are rebuilding though.
