Hello to everyone!!! I am new to OB

Hi there! I got my first orchid six months ago so I am very new to them. I now have eight and absolutely love them! I want to learn as much as I can so if anyone has advise for a beginner or can point me toward good resources that would be great! I have a few books and have learned a bit on the web but am still not sure about the resting and re-blooming periods. Any advise is appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome to OB! You will get lots of good advice here. I see you are up north, so I will leave it to our northern members to give you the best advice. Also, you can post your specific questions in the beginners forum or just search other posts there. Always include pictures with your questions if possible. We love pictures here at OB!

First I need to know what orchids do you have? some orchids do require a rest period such as dendrobiums, wich is a very large family of orchid. as far as reblooming period,s. my orchids usually bloom all the time,or after a rest, or with each new growth. I myself am a micro miniature orchid species nut. so i deal with all the different lighting levels, temputure,s and even humidity levels.i from buffalo ny so i grow then indoors during the colder months of the year. if you have any certain question to ask go for it. I could write a book with all the mumbo jumbo rolling around inside this head of mine.

Hello! Here is a list of the orchids I have, some of them wernt labeled well when I got them. All of them but two were from grocery stores. Catts Asrt,Phal/Laura#5,Dendrobium Antennatum hybrid,miltonia Clowesii,Paph Concolor,two other unlabeled phals and one other unknown. I keep all of them together on humidity trays neer a south facing window but not in direct light. I am real confused as to when I should expect them to rest and bloom and all the info I get is either too vague or contradictory. I have been looking for a chart or something I can follow so if you know of anything let me know. Any ideas would be great!

Hello and welcome to the Orchid Board.
I am not aware of an actual blooming chart for all orchids but most catts and phals bloom once or twice a year. Are yours blooming now?

Hi there Joann!
Yes my Phals are in bloom and have been for at least four months now. The Catts, I just got a few weeks ago. It is in bloom right now so we'll see how long it will last. Its so hard not to buy new orchids! I have to keep telling myself to wait till I know what I'm doing with what I have. This is such a trial and error project!

Aren't the Phales so rewarding with their long-lasting blooms. I got my first about 9 mos. ago. The blooms are gone but I'm hoping that they will rebloom. Several are growing new leaves. I think that Catts like much higher light levels and warmer temps so I haven't tried any of them yet but there are many here that grow them, I just haen't tried. Look around on the other threads and see what you find and ask questions and show pics
