Newbie from Finland - Orchid Board

Hello y'all!
I found this forum a few days ago, loads of very useful information. I'm still pretty new to orchids but...
I sold my last fish a week ago and i'm now converting my tank into a vivarium for moss and orchids. need I say more.. I have one question concerning the use of driftwood for mounting. are tannins somehow toxic/bad for orchids? is it safe to mount directly on the piece of wood with maybe a bit of sphagnum etc? all the wood pieces have soaked in the fish tank for over a year so I would imagine a lot of tannins have dissolved by now.

I have lots of stuff mounted and I almost always have some spag between the wood and the plant, then again between the plant and the fishing line I use. I haven't used woods fresh from a fish tank so we'll have to see what the others have to say about that

Do you have any orchids yet? If you do, what do you have?

We have a great gallery for photos and a chat room that usually starts the party around 8pm est. I know there's a huge time difference. We have another member from Finland on board (Ludisia) and she was up chatting with us at 4 am recently!!!

Species are a little hard to find and the prices are outrageous here. I'm gonna order orchids from germany
as soon as i'm a little further with the tank setup.

at the moment I'm "limited to" a Paph.sukhakulii, Paph.Pinocchio and what I believe to be an Odontoglossum hybrid ( i got it as a "Cambria") blooming with 35 beautiful flowers in three stalks.
oh, and three Phals I adopted from my girlfriend, now wife..

Nice to have you here. Paph. Pinocchio and Paph. sukhakulii are excellent start to your collection.

Have you found finnish forum yet? We used to make also several group orders there.

I've got few orchids mounted in cork oak with spagnum moss. It's easy to cut and put to hang somewhere. I think mangrove wood is also suitable because of several tiny holes.

Welcome! This place just continues to grow and get better. I believe we are all better off because of the international membership. I've learned quite a bit by viewing members' photos of orchids in the wilds and how people from various countries/cultures grow their orchids. Lots of ideas here on the board.

Welcome to the Orchid Board. I have never considered the tannins in the drift wood. I will let you know someday if it actually has an affect on the orchids as I have mounted catts, encyclias, sophronitis, phalaenopsis and a haraella to bare malaysian driftwood. Now Im worried!!
