Default Norwegian newbie - just introducing myself

So not sure what I should write other than I'm based in the cold Nordics (Oslo, Norway, Europe) where the winter is long and cold (will find a F to Celsius converter so I can tell you more specific temperatures) - and really dark - and the summers are short, sometimes cold and rainy, but really bright!

I (we I should say as it's my husband that introduced me to orchids) grow the orchids I can get my hands on, sometimes I kill them, sometimes I cannot seem to kill them, sometimes they never bloom again, but sometimes they really bloom for ages (usually Phaleonopsis, but who can go wrong with those??). Until recently I have grown them on my windowsill only, but I now have a completely new orangerie (or greenhouse) in my garden that I will make use of for orchids. I also have a guest room with an east facing window for colder temperatures indoors, allthough it may be too dark. We'll see.

During winter it can get really cold by the windows, even though they are double glaced and insulated, and the air can get really dry as we have to have heating ovens under the windows. So quite hard to keep the humidity right. I cannot spend my time watering all the time as I have other things to do also... In the orangerie we can set up a humidifier, but I'd like to have flowering orchids indoors too!

Basically, I'm not going to go bananas growing orchids that required a spefical box or casing, but I'd quite like to successfully flower my dendrobiums, cymbidiums, wanda, cattleya, and miltonia in addition to what I have been able to get to reflower already (oncidium, phaleonopsis, cambria, paphiopedilum, and zygopethalum)

So that's me, basically!

J

Hi and welcome , I am very new to this forum and to growing orchids, but I am learning all the time on here. The orangerie ( greenhouse) sounds great but yes I agree it is nice to have them inside to see them more frequently. It sounds like you are doing well already. I hope someone can help you with what to grow and where. I hope you enjoy reading the posts here as much as i do!

to Orchidboard!!

I admire you for being able to grow orchids so far north. Already I find orchid growing during dutch winters to be quite a challenge, so it must be difficult for you with such long dark winters!
I'd love to see of your orchids and of your new orangerie/greenhouse.

J

Welcome to the Orchid Board. I have visited Oslo twice, both in the summer, a wonderful city. And I have a niece who is married to a young man from Fredrikstad. She teaches english at a local school there.

Check out our upcoming Project --- we have over 60 people from around the world --- we all are going to buy the same orchid species and compare as we all try to grow it the best.

Again, welcome.

Charlie

Default Thanks for the warm welcome!

It's good to see that a nordic person is so warmly welcomed! Not sure what about me being Norwegian that automatically makes me a nice person, but thanks!

I'm currently uploading my pictures to my profile albums (and also uploaded a few to the gallery thinking it's my albums, but heywe all make mistakes hehe). So if you want to see what I manage to grow up here you'll find it there. Currently I only have 6 Phals that I have managed to reflower, and a couple of Paphs. The rest I bought this winter (including the 4 I just bought between the first posting and this one..hehe).

My objective this year is to get my dendros to bloom again, as well as my cymbidiums. But currently they are still blooming as they did when I bought them so I'm currently just appreciating that

We cannot get that many plants here, unless it's part of the orchid club's import or a freak chance like the one I found at IKEA, or the 4 I got today from our local shopkeeper (he finds and buys the ones nobody wants as they are too far along with their flowering etc - no reason not to buy them as they are way cheaper!). A Wanda typically costs between 400 and 800 NOKs (I think 1 EUR is 8.5 NOK currently).

I'll also post pictures of the greenhouse in my album as it progresses into completion. Right now it's just covered in snow and with a big hole for a floor...

Hello Jannicke,
a welcome from me too! It's great to have you here!
I think I recognized the white flowering Dendrobium in your album. It might be Dendrobium nobile Spring Dream Apollon. I have the same plant, at least they look similar. The nursery from mine is Wooning Orchids - world of varieties

Hi Jannicke and welcome to Orchid Board.

It must be a realy challenge to grow 'chids so far north. This is a great place to get advice about all orchid growing and everyone is really friendly. Ask all the questions you need and we'll do all we can to help, and people like me will learn from reading the answers you get.
