Default Hello from Houston, TX!

Hi everyone! I recently got bit by the orchid bug a few months ago. It started when I chose to take home a "Just add ice" Phalaenopsis orchid from my mom's house after she passed away. She loved the orchid and I wanted to preserve it for her. After looking into how to care for it (since I was always had a brown thumb), I learned the basics of orchids care (without ice) and have become addicted! I now have 9 orchids and I'm doing everything I can not to spend my life savings on more! I've followed this site for a while and finally decided to join after seeing all the helpful tips and advice from everyone. I'm sure I'll end up asking a lot of questions but I hope someday I'll be able to provide answers to other newbies.

Welcome!

You have come to the right place... but don't count on learning to not spend your life savings on orchids... pretty much everybody here is hopelessly hooked. To see where it leads, this poem says it all...

Welcome to the Orchid Board! I'm sorry about your mom. But it will be nice to look at your orchids and think of her.

That poem is AWESOME! I keep my grow light low in the window so I don't get a visit but I get a sneaking feeling it will happen someday!

Thank you! I've never been good at growing anything so the fact that orchids seem to favor me says something to me!

Early in my "orchid career" I was living in a condo, and I converted the spare bedroom to a "green room" for the warmer growing orchids (mostly Phals, but some Oncidium intergenerics, etc) There was a window that gave good light for maybe 4-5 hours a day, but the Phals mostly didn't bloom. So I got several $9.99 Home Depot fluorescent shop lights to supplement the natural light. (And got about 80% reblooming) Coming up the alley to my garage in the evening, the room was aglow... I never got raided but would have been a candidate.

Welcome itslinzee. You have found the motherload of orchid advice. Like you, I am new to orchids and am totally obsessed. Three years ago I had zero orchids and I now have 60, with about 10 more on my wish list. You will benefit greatly from this board.

itslinzee ------ we're reading you loud and clear (comm check). Houston -------- we have no problem. Green for go.

Thanks for becoming a member. You'll be in good hands on this forum. We all started somewhere and were all newbies at one stage.

One nice thing (among many nice things) about joining the orchidboard forum is you can ask questions at your own leisure, and ask as much as you like. And we can see and share very nice pics of orchid flowers (and orchid plants or part of orchid plants) too here!
