Water culture for Paphiopedilums? Female
Default Water culture for Paphiopedilums?

Hello, I am new to this wonderful forum and new to water culture and, in fact, new to any success with orchids too.

I have lost every orchid ever given to me but this one little Phal, a friend gave me three yrs ago, refused to die. It didn't do anything else either but was on it's last legs when I found Danielle's Orchid Ranch on you tube and from Danielle I found Rick L. There are others I watch but they are my inspiration.

Hooked after my little Phal looked happier in water and even grew a tiny bump, I order more orchids which were cleaned up and put into water before their roots hit the ground and then I ordered more --- but and help 1st the Malibu took 1/2 - 2 hrs to clean ( not yet completely) from a solid mass of ancient moss and 2nd The Paphiopedilum 'Rosy Dawn' had a surprise - it ad hairy roots! Since the bark was in the kitchen sink and I had no more I have put it in water - it has 1/3 of its roots in water ( the plant split into two when freed from its bark so each plant has its own glass) ---note: I shall from now on photograph each plant when it arrives ---- they seem ok and their roots are moist but I am not sure that wc is right for them. Has anyone else had success with a Paph in water culture? Any suggestions? I have ordered bark and perlite if wc doesn't go well.

Welcome to Orchid Board OrchidHeaven!

I grow nothing in water culture, but there are members here who do. I'll let them chime in first.

Thank for the welcome and yes I have seen that some posters in here do. I have not come across anyone who has had success with Paphs in water though.
I am not sure that it can be done - if not mine will be out of water next week. I didn't do enough research on them before ordering one - fools walk in ..........!

I grow all of mine in semi-hydro culture, but not just water.

Oh OK - I am not taken by semi-water culture except for those who like a dry spell - then I just let them drink their water and I leave them for a few days.
I don't think water culture will work very well for my Paphs - and shall put them back in bark and perlite when it arrives. I am sure there is a way but don't want them to suffer for my ignorance. I have seen Korean videos with them in fwc but can't understand what they are saying ....
