Hey everyone,

I've been growing orchids for about half a year now, and I've decided that I want to become more involved in the online orchid community. To do this I made a YouTube channel and uploaded a video to share my orchids with everyone and connect with fellow growers. Welcome to this board! Good video too! I did notice you used plastic covers to cover-over the dendrobium media surface .... not fully. Has that been working ok? Only asking because I was thinking that the humidity under there could lead to mold/mould growth etc? Nice orchids you have in the video!

Thank you for taking the time to watch! There is no mold so far. The covering is necessary to stop the top layer of the LECA from drying out.

I'm interested to know your growing conditions for Laelia Harpophylla, especially light and criteria for watering.

Hi rbarata,

My Laelia Harpophylla is grown in self-watering LECA (which it seems to be very happy with in my environment). As part of this set up, the whole pot is flushed and watered (with fertiliser) whenever the reservoir begins to empty. I do not let the pot ever get dry. It sits on a shelf by an eastern window and gets direct morning sun for a few hours in the morning. Currently, The temperatures tend to be around 22°C during the day and around 19°C at night. I hope that this helps you, and since it is a species you should be able to find more information online

Everything I find is always contradicting when it comes to specific orchids, it seems

In this case some sources say it's a cool growing orchid while others say it's warm...maybe in some regions warm is the same as cool in other regions.
Anyway, so far it seems to be doing great...no new growths but it has some new roots.

Can't wait to watch the video. I don't have a headset for this machine (my daughter stole it... again!) So I'll watch on my phone later in bed

But, I wanted to say I buried my orchids a bit deeper in the leca so they could have their bottoms where the leca doesn't dry out. About an inch (2cm) or so from the bottom of the bulbs. I figure they have plenty of dry air at that level while getting the newer roots to where there is a bit of moisture. I hope that if I'm careful with watering that they won't get water in any spot that might cause rot. I'm still getting my orchids adapted to semi hydro and hope that once they have roots down deep, I can pull off the excess?

Edit: it depends on the size of the orchid, as some of the smaller ones are just down one pellet, maybe 1/2"

That's an interesting strategy! I hope that it works out for you. As I state in the video, I potted one of my dendrobiums a little deeper in the LECA and it got black rot. But then I had it deeper in the LECA *and* I was trying to keep the top moist, so I suppose that I was doomed to fail. Please let me know how well your method works out for you
