Default Terrarium designer joining the orchid ranks...

Greetings all. My name is jason p, I'm the owner of Protean Terrarium Design, a small glass terrarium and vivarium manufacturing company located in Los Angeles, California.

I've been a long time orchid enthusiast but have not had the time or space with my reptile business and terrarium business. I've kept many different species of orchids but have always settled back on loving oncidiums and masdevalias.

Currently, I spend nearly all my friend time designing terrariums for the pet trade but have shifted some to accomodate the horticultural field since there are many people who enjoy plants but need a microclimate due to their living situation, i.e. keeping cloud forest ferns or orchids but residing in Phoenix, Arizona.

My passions though are focused in reptiles. I'm an avid gecko breeder who works with Uroplatus geckos and Goniurosaurus geckos. I keep a few snakes and other species but generally I work with one country, Madagascar. I had to limit myself otherwise I would end up with too many animals and too little time for a life - although with the businesses I dont have much of one as it is but i would have even less if i had more animals.

But before I digress into too many details of my passions I'll show some photos of enclosures I've manufactured (I cant take credit for the landscaping of each enclosure but I certainly can state they are manufactured by PTD).

Display enclosure for a expo in Seattle, WA. 60" l x 28" d x 48" t

same enclosure - unplanted

One poorly planted gecko tank (yes its mine, I can make fun of it....)

15" w x 17" d x 24" t

custom chambered cage for a specific breeding colony of geckos

same enclosure, different angle

Hope you liked the photos. I look forward to picking everyone's horticulturally enhanced brains over the next few years as to what makes a great terrarium for orchids.

Best Regards
Jason P

That planted expo terrarium looks awesome!

I made my own vivarium last april, it kinda has the same shape.. I really struggled to get that glass cut and assembled!! Well and I've been struggling with it ever since to keep the plants happy

It's 6 feet tall, so I've had alot of trubble getting enough light in there to grow my orchids. Now I'm adding more and more HighPower LEDs whenever I have money to buy some :P (expecting a new shipment in this week - which I hope will make every plant in there happy )
There are so many great people here that you really can learn alot from!

Anyways, Welcome on (orchid)board..

Oh, and here's a couple of pics of my tank..
